L'Arminuta
L'Arminuta | Donatella Di Pietrantonio

repost for @jlhammar:

Okay #EuropaCollective, let the voting begin! I hope you haven‘t read either of these yet. I‘ve got back-up choices if you have.

Which of these would you most like to read in September? I‘ll add links to the Europa catalog in the comments.

If anyone plans to join us that I didn‘t tag, do let me know. All are welcome to #Buddyread along with us!

A girl is returned at the age of 13 by her adoptive parents to her much poorer birth family. She feels devastated and abandoned and struggles to understand why and survive her new environment.
Like Elena Ferrante, the author approached the mid-70s in the more impoverished parts of Italian society. She built equally strong female characters who are the product of the period, polished by poverty and aware that education was the key to a better life.

I read this on a whim after comparing books I could get in Hoopla with the Tournament of Books longlist and loved it! It's about a 13 year old who is suddenly returned to her much poorer birth family and has non idea why, and forced to navigate siblings, work, all while feeling rejected and grieving her former life. The comparisons to Ferrante are warranted for once, and not only that they share a translator.

Cathythoughts I loved the Ferrante series ❤️stacked 4y
ReadingEnvy @Cathythoughts me too but I haven't finished it, whoops 4y

Im still grateful to her, but after I graduated I didn‘t go back. I‘m not in the habit of returning to those I‘ve left. Donatella Di Pietrantonio from A Girl Returned

Nag1 Loved this book so much. I recommend it. What defines a mother? What is love? 5y
