Tough Choices
Tough Choices: Bearing an Illegitimate Child in Japan | Ekaterina Hertog
5 posts
As is the case in Western industrialized countries, Japan is seeing a rise in the number of unmarried couples, later marriages, and divorces. What sets Japan apart, however, is that the percentage of children born out of wedlock has hardly changed in the past fifty years. This book provides the first systematic study of single motherhood in contemporary Japan. Seeking to answer why illegitimate births in Japan remain such a rarity, Hertog spent over three years interviewing single mothers, academics, social workers, activists, and policymakers about the beliefs, values, and choices that unmarried Japanese mothers have. Pairing her findings with extensive research, she considers the economic and legal disadvantages these women face, as well as the cultural context that underscores family change and social inequality in Japan. This is the only scholarly account that offers sufficient detail to allow for extensive comparisons with unmarried mothers in the West.

Here are my choices for our group reads. Let me know what you think group N. #lmpbc @Jerdencon @ads0123 @DGRachel

Everybody posted great title choices! It‘s going to be hard to choose. 😬

DGRachel The only one I‘ve read is Peril at End House and I wasn‘t a fan. I‘m good with trying any of the others. 4y
katy4peas @DGRachel okay! I haven‘t read any of them, so I‘m up for any of these. No problem! 4y
ads0123 Either of these work for me but I‘m leaning towards Third Girl or Towards Zero. 4y
suvata We did a Christie group last round and it was really fun. Enjoy! 4y
katy4peas Okay, i think I‘m going with Towards Zero! @DGRachel @ads0123 @Jerdencon (edited) 4y

GypsyKat @Bklover I‘ve actually seen a couple! Jewelry was tied with chocolate for fourth for me, but only because of my wedding rings. 6y
Bklover @GypsyKat Well, I stand corrected! I guess it just wouldn‘t be on my list! 😉😘 6y
GypsyKat @Bklover I think the only thing I haven‘t seen anyone pick is dry shampoo. I love my dry shampoo, but it definitely ranks low on this list! 😉 6y
Bklover @GypsyKat I don‘t think my daughter would go very far without her dry shampoo! (She‘s not a Litten, tho) 6y
GypsyKat @Bklover Non Littens definitely tend to have slightly different priorities. I know that we ALL chose books! 📚😊 6y
Bklover @GypsyKat Yes!!!!❤️❤️😘 6y
fleeting We both got Chekhov in that quiz and we both chose the same 3 things in this list!! 😂✋ 6y
Bklover @fleeting Kindred spirits!! 6y

So, after I saw my massive #MountTBR I‘ve narrowed it down to this four as my #NextRead but I need your help in deciding which is first! Tell me in the comments whether you prefer A, B, C or D. I‘ll randomly select a Litten who comments & I‘ll send them a card with some bookmarks & stickers. It‘s not much but I hope you like it! #LikeTryingToChooseBetweenChildren PS, I just noticed that each book starts with The!

ChasingOm A was one of my favorite reads last year and introduced me to an entirely new genre — Weird Westerns! ❤️ 7y
Johanna414 Based solely on the covers, I say B or C. So pretty! 7y
squirrelbrain I‘d go with D - I haven‘t read it yet myself, but it‘s the one I‘ve seen most recommended on here. 7y
MyNamesParadise I‘ve read D and I really enjoyed it!! 7y
AmberWB C just because it jumps out at me. 😉 7y
MamaGina I read D and loved it and I think you would too. Just when you think it's finished there's a short final chapter that makes you go 😳 Love when that happens!🤓 7y
Ottergirl D because that‘s one I want to read 7y
drbethandherkindle Agree with @MamaGina — I read it, liked it, and it seems like a good pick for you! 7y
