The Chalk Man
The Chalk Man | C. J. Tudor
THE book of 2018. The Chalk Man is coming . . . Looking back, it all started on the day of the fair and the terrible accident. When twelve-year-old Eddie first met the Chalk Man. It was the Chalk Man who gave Eddie the idea for the drawings: a way to leave secret messages between his group of friends. And it was fun, to start with, until the figures led them to the body of a young girl. That was thirty years ago and Ed thought the past was behind him. Then he receives a letter containing just two things: a piece of chalk, and a drawing of a stick figure. As history begins to repeat itself, Ed realises the game was never over . . . Everyone has secrets. Everyone is guilty of something. And children are not always so innocent. **** 'Tense, skillful storytelling' Ali Land, bestselling author of Good Me Bad Me 'What a great book. A twisty thriller and downright creepy ending. 5 stars.' Sarah Pinborough, the number 1 bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes

I really enjoyed this mystery. The alternation between present day and 30 years ago was an effective storytelling device. It made the little cliffhangers/reveals at the end of each chapter hit a bit harder. There were so many twists and turns that I was kept guessing for most of the book. It's a quick read, and I recommend it if you're in the mood for a less intense thriller. ⭐⭐⭐/5

I really liked this, especially as I was reading. There were a lot of characters, though, and many had nicknames. Somehow, at the start of each time I sat down to read, I got a bit confused as to who was who, and trying to remember what had happened the last time I read. Not sure why I had to much trouble keeping things straight in between readings, but I liked it a lot while I was actually reading it, so I‘m leaving it at a 4 star rating

With nothing more than a title to suggest it, I expected The Chalk Man to be a supernatural thriller, perhaps a bit gory, of modern horror film ilk. What I found was a fascinatingly human protagonist in a broken and human community, slugging through a mystery that requires attention. Not at all frightening, but well-paced, convincingly-written, and very engaging.

Kaylamburson Thank you to the surprise card from England! (At least I think based on the stamp and postmark). I will have to properly thank you once I know who sent it, but I'm following strict instructions to not open until October 26th! You never want to mess with that birthday magic! 1mo

When you open the copy of The Chalk Man you just bought and see this 👀 I don't like the fact it's uncorrected. There better not be loads of mistakes, it drives me mad when there is!

TorieStorieS Where did you buy it?? You are probably eligible for a refund. ARCs are not meant to be sold!! 3mo

Initially, I thought the characters and circumstances reminded me too much of Stephen King's "It." Then the novel took a completely different turn and I became really absorbed into it. I bonded with the reclusive main character and was invested in his outcome.

Ended yesterday with 17 hours 20 sec so far for the #24B4Monday #readathon .

I don‘t read much in the genre. But it felt like a good weekend at the lake read after several dense history and literary fiction reads. I got hooked in, but very disappointed in the ending. So many red herrings and dead-end plot devices. Hashtag I‘d rather reed Tana French.

Can someone please talk to me about the ending reveal in this book? Like the author does a pretty good job of dropping white pebbles along the path to show that the main character is the one who took the dead girl‘s head, so when it‘s revealed at the end I was like “cool I knew it.” Was I supposed to be shocked?

Melissa_J I felt rather let down at the end, waiting for a twist that never came. I still enjoyed the book overall, but the ending was rather unexpected. 5mo
twohectobooks @Melissa_J I basically had the same experience. For me the real “twist” was the reveal that the MC is beginning to develop dementia like his father did. 5mo
PaulaNovotna I feel like the whole book was like that. It always said what would happen in a few sentences and then it dragged to the "reveal" next 100 pages... 5mo
twohectobooks @PaulaNovotna yeah, that‘s a good point. 5mo
SamAnne The book and reveals thoroughly irritated me. It‘s not my usual genre though. I didn‘t like the red herrings thrown out on the path like the poisoned dog, etc. 3mo

A dual timeline book in which mysterious chalk figures begin to show up where a group of kids didn‘t draw them, and many years later the same kids are drawn together as adults to finally figure out what happened. I liked this book just fine but mostly it made me want to read some Stephen King because he‘s the master at this sort of thing. Not as good as the hype led me to expect unfortunately.

It was enough suspenseful that I finished with reading it, but ... I don‘t know if I have to blame the translation, or this story is written in a quite poor language. Yes to the story, no for the language. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

My bookish goals are on track - I finished 2 books. This week I increased my fitness goals: walking - from 21 km to 25 km ➡️ I walked 26,7 km, workouts at home - from 3 hours to 4 ➡️ I reached 3 hours and 10 minutes, but I was to the two yoga classes, which means 4 hours of yoga instead of 2. For next week my fitness goals are the same, but I will try incorporate some changes in the nutrition/food area, especially regular breakfast during weekdays

Not my favourite, but still a good read. The last couple of pages though... best bit of the whole book, in my opinion! It had some good cliffhangers during the story, so it kept me invested, but I found it a little slow and boring as well, so rating it is hard. But 3 stars seems just right.

There were bits of this I liked, but not enough to make it a pick. My main favourite bit was Andrew Scott reading it (he is AMAZING) but I do kinda wish he‘d been performing a different book... I wasn‘t that into the whole hoarding thing, I found the ending a bit silly and some of the writing was quite cliche 🤷‍♀️ entertaining overall, but that‘s mainly Andrew Scott being amazing

I don‘t want to always read the same genres and I‘ve enjoyed thrillers before so hoping this one will be something a bit different for me, though it would probably be hard to convert me into a hardcore thriller reader

The Chalk Man is everything I could want in a book: Well-written, suspenseful, vivid imagery, beautiful prose, profound insight, creepy atmosphere, and some startling twists. While there are some graphic scenes, it is not gratuitously violent. Those scenes serve an important purpose and are not extensive throughout the book.

Some serious Stephen King vibes, ‘It‘ in particular with the 2 time period, the gang of kids (complete with the one red-headed girl) and older bullies to deal with... which made perfect sense when I went to learn more about the author and discovered she was a huge King fan.

All said, I was pleasantly surprised by this one 👍
Often these latest trendy books end up irritating me but I enjoyed this and the #audiobook narrator was decent.
