A Shilling for Candles
A Shilling for Candles | Josephine Tey
8 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
Was there anyone who didnt want lovely screen actress Christine Clay dead? Beneath the sea cliffs of the south coast, suicides are a sad but common fact of life. Yet even the hardened coastguard knows something is wrong when a beautiful film actress is found lying dead on the beach one bright summers morning. Inspector Grant has to take a more professional attitude: death by suicide, however common, has to have a motivejust like murder

As i listened to this the action playing out in my head looked more like a madcap comedy (starring Maureen O'Hara and Jack Lemmon perhaps 🤔) than a murder mystery. It was entertaining- once the listener absorbs the attitudes that haven't aged well- but there is no gravitas to the death that begins the story and little sense to the reveal of the villain at the end. Again, entertaining, but not nearly as good as The Franchise Affair.

CarolynM Not my favourite Tey, either. 2y

Finished my first book for the #20in4 readathon!

I only have one Tey mystery left & I will have read them all.😀

The solution sort of came out of nowhere, but I enjoyed the ride. An actress who has snuck off to a remote cottage in Kent is found drowned after her early morning swim. Accident or Murder? Inspector Grant of Scotland Yard is called in. Some weird ideas on Jews as an ethnic group, not uncommon for books of this era, but still jarring.

batsy I love Tey, and most of her books stand out for me, but I know I read this and can't remember much 🙈 A good excuse for a reread! 4y
Ruthiella @batsy A perfect excuse to re-read! My favorites so far are The Daughter of Time and The Man in the Queue. The last one I‘ve to read now is The Singing Sands. 😀 4y
batsy @Ruthiella I like Sands and Queue, and Daughter of Time is deservedly a (cult?) classic 🙌🏽 That and Miss Pym Disposes, The Franchise Affair, and Brat Farrar are my faves 😍 4y

CarolynM I'm another Tey fan. Daughter of Time is one of my favourite books of any kind. Queue and Pym are my other favourites of hers. @batsy (edited) 4y
Ruthiella @CarolynM @batsy When I‘ve read the last one, I‘ll have to re-read them as a project. There was a great episode discussing on Miss Pym Disposes a couple of weeks ago on the Backlisted podcast. 4y
CarolynM Thanks for the tip, I'll look up that podcast🙂 4y
batsy I love Backlisted! Maybe I'll re-read Pym soon before I listen to that episode :) 4y

Published in 1936, second in a delightful British mystery series featuring Inspector Grant. This one also includes supporting character Erica Burgoyne, a intelligent tomboy who almost steals the show.

A successful actress is found drowned, initially thought of as an accident but then discovered to be murder. There are many suspects, a husband, a brother, lovers ? A friend ?. Inspector Alan Grant investigates and finds the true killer in a great unexpected twist. If you like Agatha Christie you‘ll love Josephine Tey too. English detective tales

CarolynM Love Josephine Tey 6y
Lel2403 @CarolynM have you read any of George Bellairs novels, very similar...both under-rated in my opinion 6y
CarolynM No, I don't think so, the name isn't familiar to me. I will look into him. Thanks for the tip🙂 6y

#🕯 #thisremindsmeof the Josephine Tey book on my shelf.

JazzFeathers Oh, this is so intriguing! I read one of Nicola Upson's novels featuring Josephine Tey. I gather Tey was a real writer, but l didn't guess she actually wrote mysteries. Upson's stories are phenomenal. I think l should try Tey too 😊 7y
batsy Good pick! I have this but haven't read it yet either @JazzFeathers Definitely try Tey! Maybe this one to start with ☺️ 7y
