Memoir interweaving the Great Salt Lake, birds and the death of the authors mother and grandmother.
The bad news is this was just ok for me, good news I'm using it for so many challenges.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa At least you found a silver lining at the Refuge. 5y
Cinfhen Agreed @Riveted_Reader_Melissa and it‘s a shame, because I‘ve heard wonderful things about this memoir. #OhWell 5y
mreads @Cinfhen well I'm definitely in the minority. There was quite a bit of religion and perhaps I feel differently about death in my late 40s. I did like by the author 5y

Published in 1936, second in a delightful British mystery series featuring Inspector Grant. This one also includes supporting character Erica Burgoyne, a intelligent tomboy who almost steals the show.

CarolynM Josephine Tey's books are wonderful, especially 5y

LiteraryinLawrence I just read book one and loved it! I definitely want to continue the series with Inspector Grant. 4y

The only novel from Gwendolyn Brooks who in 1940 became the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize. The novel captures the everyday experience of an African American woman in the 1940s reflecting on her childhood, marriage and motherhood.

Reggie Did it make you feel a certain way? 5y
mreads @Reggie Sad maybe? I don't think that's necessarily what the author wants but I'm white and the novel is not about anything extraordinary just about everyday life for a average looking dark skinned black woman and how she's treated in her community and by whites. It 5y

Olive Kitteridge | Elizabeth Strout

Set in a fictional town in Maine, a series of short stories where (mostly unlikable) Olive is the main character, a side character or sometimes just passing by. It's also as much about small town life as it is about Olive.

Set during China's infamous Cultural Revolution two city boys are exiled to a remote mountain village for reeducation where they meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. This was just ok and the ending was jarring.

tournevis I wonder if the translation into English is the problem. Because it won prizes and such, including the Goncourt, if The remember well. 5y

Going public with my 2019 Reading Goals and Challenges.

Thanks to @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft for hosting #booked2019

#readingwomenchallenge in from the Reading Women podcast and blog https://www.readingwomenpodcast.com/reading-women-challenge-2019/

#centuryreadchallenge is to read one book from each year 1918 to 2019

Soubhiville I love your goals! My goals are traversing Mount TBR except for audio and library books. Announcing it here is a great idea, too! 5y
mreads @Soubhiville Thanks 😀 5y

Naj Reading two non-fiction books every month is my goal as well! Good luck on all of these😊🙌 5y
alisiakae Wow! These are awesome goals! I try to read at least 1 non-fiction each month, but was also thinking about increasing that. 5y
mreads @Cinfhen agree though I did give myself a generous budget 😀 5y
mreads @Naj @4thhouseontheleft Thanks! Yes we can do it - 2 a month! I do like memoirs and they're not as heavy as some nonfiction and often shorter. 5y

As part of my #centuryreadchallenge I searched goodreads for books from 1919 and found 'The Search' a popular romance that was free on kindle. Pretty good trope with strong but poor soldier, pretty rich socialite and rich powerful villain unfortunately there was also too much of the Christian God as well for me. If you read Christian romance you may like otherwise avoid.

Charming little (less than 100 pages) epistolary novel of letters between an American book buyer/lover and the employees of a second hand bookstore in London. Set over the course of two decades 1949 to 1969. #centuryreadchallenge

The Man in the Queue | Josephine Tey

Pickpick

Josephine Tey is wonderful, I've liked quite a few of her novels/mysteries but this was just barely a pick. To be far it's her debut and she definitely gets better. I suggest starting with Brat Farrar.

Thought the date stamps from the back of the library book made a fun pic.

Lel2403 I‘ve read a couple of hers and loved them. Added this to my TBR list 📖 5y
