Published in 1936, second in a delightful British mystery series featuring Inspector Grant. This one also includes supporting character Erica Burgoyne, a intelligent tomboy who almost steals the show.

Published in 1994, excellent interrelated short story collection revolving around a young African-American girl coming of age in 1950s in a small African-American neighborhood.

The only novel from Gwendolyn Brooks who in 1940 became the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize. The novel captures the everyday experience of an African American woman in the 1940s reflecting on her childhood, marriage and motherhood.

Set in a fictional town in Maine, a series of short stories where (mostly unlikable) Olive is the main character, a side character or sometimes just passing by. It's also as much about small town life as it is about Olive.

Set during China's infamous Cultural Revolution two city boys are exiled to a remote mountain village for reeducation where they meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. This was just ok and the ending was jarring.

#centuryreadchallenge is to read one book from each year 1918 to 2019

As part of my #centuryreadchallenge I searched goodreads for books from 1919 and found 'The Search' a popular romance that was free on kindle. Pretty good trope with strong but poor soldier, pretty rich socialite and rich powerful villain unfortunately there was also too much of the Christian God as well for me. If you read Christian romance you may like otherwise avoid.

Charming little (less than 100 pages) epistolary novel of letters between an American book buyer/lover and the employees of a second hand bookstore in London. Set over the course of two decades 1949 to 1969. #centuryreadchallenge

Josephine Tey is wonderful, I've liked quite a few of her novels/mysteries but this was just barely a pick. To be far it's her debut and she definitely gets better. I suggest starting with Brat Farrar.
