Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Bread is an object that is always in process of becoming something else: flower to grain, grain to dough, dough to loaf, loaf to crumb. Bread is also often a figure or vehicle of social cohesion: from the homely image of "breaking bread together?? to the mysteries of the Eucharist. But bread also commonly figures in social conflict - sometimes literally, in the "bread riots?? that punctuate European history, and sometimes figuratively, in the ways bread operates as ethnic, religious or class signifier. Drawing on a wide range of sources, from the scriptures to modern pop culture, Bread tells the story of how this ancient and everyday object serves as a symbol for both social communion and social exclusion. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

EadieB @Andrew65 That's great! Are you still suffering with the acid reflux? 1mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Unfortunately but trying wherever possible to ignore it. Hoping latest blood test will show some improvement with the liver readings, after all made very radical changes. 1mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Acid reflux doesn‘t make sense at this point since it‘s been a while that you have changed your diet. Would the liver problem be causing the acid? 1mo
Crazeedi I love when my homemade rolls come put of the oven, they are delicious warm! Sorry @Andrew65 that you can't enjoy. I'd send you all some if I could...😉 1mo
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I hope you get some definite answers ((hugs)) 1mo
Daisey Very true! ❤️ the smell of fresh baked bread! 1mo
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s the question I‘ve been asking, not git a clear answer to this yet. Seems too coincidental. The changing of the diet doesn‘t seem to help or make the issue worse. (edited) 1mo
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Thanks 😍 Barring the acid, and pains, I feel better for the change in diet. (edited) 1mo

Crazeedi The bread! My gram made it too and actually made doughnuts and sold them to the guys who worked at the plant in my hometown. And a woodstove would be perfect!! 6mo
CoverToCoverGirl @Crazeedi I make my own bread now but without the wood stove to help flavour it, it‘s never ever seemed quite as good as Gran‘s. 6mo
Crazeedi @CoverToCoverGirl nothings ever as good as grams, I make my moms buns now too... 6mo

Mehso-so

I like the Object Lessons series where various writers essentially craft a long form essay around a specific object or concept. Bread went a little too heavily into philosophy and etymology for me. I enjoyed the aspects about baking, religion, and revolution more.

emilyhaldi Love the cover 😍 2y
