Winter at the Door
Winter at the Door: A Novel | Sarah Graves
Perfect for fans of Jenny Milchman, Linda Castillo, and Lisa Gardnerthe first book in a suspenseful new crime thriller series featuring the tough but haunted police chief Lizzie Snow, a big-city cop with a mission, taking on a small town with a dark side. Moving from Boston to remote Bearkill, Maine, isnt homicide cop Lizzie Snows idea of a step up. But breaking away from tragedy and personal betrayal is at least a step in the right direction. Her dead sisters fate still torments her, as does her long-missing nieces disappearance. Lizzie hopes to find the mysteriously vanished child here, amid the coming ice and snow. But in the Great North Woods, something darker and more dangerous than punishing winter is also bound for Bearkill. The town is a world apart in more than distancefull of people who see everything, say little, and know more than theyll share with an outsider. The only exceptions are the handsome state cop who once badly broke Lizzies heart and desperately wants another chanceand Lizzies new boss, sheriff Cody Chevrier, whos counting on her years of homicide experience to help him solve his most troubling case, before its too late. A rash of freak accidents and suicides has left a string of dead menall former local cops. Now the same cruel eyes that watched them die are on Lizzieand so is the pressure to find out what sort of monster has his hooks in this town, what his ruthless game is, and just how brutally hell play to win. Whatever the truth is, its twisted roots lie in the desolate backwoods of Aroostook County: where the desperate disappear, the corrupt find shelter, and the innocent lose everything. Its there that a cunning and utterly cold-blooded killer plans the fate of the helpless lives at his mercyone of whom may be the lost child Lizzie will do anything to save. As a blizzard bears down, and Bearkills dark secrets claw their way to the surface, Lizzie gears up for a showdown that could leave the deep, driven snow stained blood red. I literally had to check to see when this book was published. The author has no clue how to write for this era. Her verbiage belongs in 1995 when people still said things like "don't dis me". It had a good story line but the characters commentary was so outdated! It was published 6 years ago...

I just couldn't REALLY get into this book

Interesting thriller/mystery set on the edge of the forest in northern Maine. I hope to make more progress on my #50states of mystery project in the coming year.

ljuliel Great job. You‘ve got lots of New England colored in. I need to work more on that area. 4y

Pickpick

Not a bad little murder mystery! I'll read the next for sure. 2 pts for falling under the #teamslaughter category and 1 pt for participation.

Starting this book for #scarathlon since it's #teamslaughter themed. Never read anything by this lady and it's 1st in a series, maybe it'll turn into a something I wanna keep up with.

Also, this is my first time using the Libby app, and it is a pretty little thing! So far I prefer it over Overdrive.

@Clwojick

Clwojick I love Libby! i'm so sad that our library is getting rid of it in November, and only using CloudLibrary. It's not nearly as user friendly. 5y
madamereadsalot1 @Clwojick that's a bummer! I've never tried it before because overdrive always did the job. But I got a new library card since I lost mine and I didn't realize it was gonna change my actual #. And now overdrive refuses to acknowledge my new #. So Libby it is. Tried Hoopla too, not a fan of the restrictions on that one. 5y
Clwojick I lost my library card, and refused to get a new one since all my apps were hooked up to the old one. 😂 Now i have to bring ID everytime i want to check out books. 5y
madamereadsalot1 @Clwojick me too! I was under the impression that they just printed you another one with your same number on it. So I do kinda of regret the decision to get another. Lol! 5y

First book of a new mystery series set in Maine. Winter at the Door was all about the atmosphere, deep woods Maine in winter. Lizzie Snow has accepted a new job moving from Boston to Bearkill, Maine's police force. Someone appears to be killing former cops and making the deaths look like suicides. Decent story but, the characters could have been further developed.
