A successful entrepreneur in the mushroom industry, Jaakko Kaunismaa is a man in his prime. At just 37 years of age, he is shocked when his doctor tells him that he's dying. What is more, the cause is discovered to be prolonged exposure to toxins; in other words, someone has slowly but surely been poisoning him. Determined to find out who wants him dead, Jaakko embarks on a suspenseful rollercoaster journey full of unusual characters, bizarre situations and unexpected twists. With a nod to Fargo and the best elements of the Scandinavian noir tradition, The Man Who Died is a page-turning thriller brimming with the blackest comedy surrounding life and death, and love and betrayal, markinng a stunning new departure for the King of Helsinki Noir.

I bought this ebook on sale today. It‘s set in #Finland by an author from Helsinki. My dear wonderful sister-in-law is from Helsinki so I like to try to learn about where she‘s from.

Jaakko is determined to find out who poisoned him and why and to preserve his mushroom export business as a legacy in the weeks if not days he has left.

The investigation itself was interesting although it did sag a bit in the middle. I found the action sequences confusing and had to read them several times to work out what had actually happened. Would I read more of his books? I might but I wouldn't go out looking for them.

I‘d asked for this myself, suggesting we go on holiday and return to our bungalow. Or should I say ‘our‘ bungalow? How much of our lives do we put in inverted commas, I wonder? Imaginations, assumptions, things we‘ve made up, memories that remain so beautiful in our minds though the truth is something else.

Then I remember – or rather I see (because memories are like a cinema where you can‘t find the exit door)

And you can say what you like about death, but its slimming effect is not to be underestimated. The swimming trunks, which pinched my hips at the beginning of summer and were so tight round my groin that they could have given me a hernia, now sit nicely, thanks to the fasting regime I instituted at dinner last night.

I liked the dry tone and Helsinki setting, but this was a little flat and slow for me. The protagonist is sympathetic in that he has a sense of the absurdity of his situation (suspected poisoning by his wife) but otherwise hard to engage with. Very much a so-so book for me - I sort of liked it but not enough to keep reading.

So glad my library picked this one up. It is darkly funny in places (the blurb relating it to Fargo is a reasonable one) and I didn't guess where it was going to end up.

Really recommend this! Somehow both noir and cosy? Very original, funny and occasionally profound. Really good translation too

I had such a wonderful bank holiday weekend in the beautiful weather, it‘s so gorgeous outside that I can‘t believe I have to go back to work tomorrow! I know I‘ll be fine when I get there but no idea how I‘ll wake up at 8am and dress respectably in this heat. Listening to a bit of Nordic noir crime for some escapism

I really enjoyed this 1st taste of "nordic noir". This is the first novel I've tried from Antti Tuomainen and it won't be my last
When mushroom entrepreneur Jaakko Kaunismaa is told that he has been poisoned and is dying he sets out to find out who has poisoned him. This takes him into some bizarre situations that a normal person would not end up in, but when you find out you are almost dead perhaps you do things that you normally would not. 4?
