A pulse-pounding thriller about a small town, a dead girl, and an investigator with nothing to lose. Mark Novak just wants to come home. Still mourning the death of his wife, private investigator Mark Novak accepts a case that may be his undoing. On the same day his wife died, the body of a teenage girl was pulled from the extensive and perilous cave system beneath Southern Indiana. Now the man who rescued the girl, who was believed to be her killer, begs Novak to uncover what really happened. Garrison is much like any place in America, proud and fortified against outsiders. For Mark to delve beneath the town's surface, he must match wits with the man who knows the caverns better than anyone. A man who seems to have lost his mind. A man who seems to know Mark Novak all too well. LAST WORDS is a pulse-pounding thriller of one man's undoing; you just may not know which man.

Michael Koryta is one of my favorite authors. This novel is full of suspense with a private investigator as the MC. After Novak‘s wife dies unexpectedly, he is sent to Indiana by his boss to investigate the 10-year-old murder of a 16-year-old girl. The story is set in a cave which provides an interesting and frightening experience. #MountTBR

Another solid thriller from Koryta. He has a knack for setting his stories in interesting, original places (in this one, the focus was caves) and then describing them in a way that makes you feel like you‘re there. Novak is a solid protagonist with many flaws that make him more likable. Looking forward to the next one in this series. 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

cassareada Oh, this sounds interesting. I'll have to add it to my list. 5y

Interesting read! I like the lead character and look forward to the next book in the series. This mystery was set around caves and was a real spine tingler!

I really enjoyed the first book I read by Koryta (“Those Who Wish Me Dead” - SO good). Looking forward to this one. Also I will read literally anything that Stephen King endorses. 🤓🤓🤓

A fascinating thriller mystery about a girl's death and a man accused but never convicted. The setting in caves below an Indiana town was so intriguing to read about. 3.5 stars. See my review at https://youtu.be/S5nEV0iAwt4

#TBRtemptation post 2! I have to say that Robert Petkoff is one of my favorite audiobook narrators. He makes stories so immersive & entrancing. If you haven't heard him narrate yet, MrBook says you're missing out 😊. Anyway, this is the first installment in the Mark Novak series. On the day Novak's wife died, a teenage girl's body was pulled out of an Indiana cave system. The discoverer's suspected but claims innocence. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Gina I ♡ Blackstone Audio books! 7y
dragondrool I just picked up a paperback of this at Sam's Club a couple of hours ago. It sounds pretty good. I also grabbed The Lilac Girls. 7y

I did this again this year on Facebook. Notice what is front and center? And look just to the left of that word! 😁(Jerry and Kevin are my kids, that is why I'm glad they were equal).

jesslovestype Haha, when my mom did this, my name was waaaaay larger than my sister's. To be fair, she tags me in So Much Stuff on Facebook, which I have to deal with and my sis doesn't. 😂 7y
Suzze @jesslovestype I know my kids would have lorded this over one another if one was bigger. They are very competitive. 7y

This was pretty good, if a bit wordy. The scenes in the caves made me claustrophobic. I am definitely curious enough to read the next in the series.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I'm looking forward to this one. Have enjoyed the Koryta books I've read. Did you ever read Nevada Barr's book set in Carlsbad, NM? Talk about claustrophobic! 8y
Suzze @kaysreadinglife Yes! I thought of that book while I was reading this! That one was even more claustrophobic than this. 8y

Just could not get into this. I liked Those Who Wish Me Dead, which surprised me because outdoor survival thrillers aren't really my thing, but I guess survival thrillers really AREN'T my thing. I found myself putting the audiobook on 1.5x speed to get through. I might have liked it more if I read it in book form & could have skimmed it faster.
