77 Shadow Street
77 Shadow Street: A Novel | Dean R. Koontz
13 posts | 33 read | 14 to read
The Pendleton stands on the summit of Shadow Hill at the highest point of an old heartland city, a Gilded Age palace built in the late 1800s as a tycoons dream home. Almost from the beginning, its grandeur has been scarred by episodes of madness, suicide, mass murder, and whispers of things far worse. But since its rechristening in the 1970s as a luxury apartment building, the Pendleton has been at peace. For its fortunate residents - among them a successful songwriter and her young son, a disgraced ex-senator, a widowed attorney, and a driven money manager - the Pendletons magnificent quarters are a sanctuary, its dark past all but forgotten. But now inexplicable shadows caper across walls, security cameras relay impossible images, phantom voices mutter in strange tongues, not-quite-human figures lurk in the basement, elevators plunge into unknown depths. With each passing hour, a terrifying certainty grows - Whatever drove the Pendletons past occupants to their unspeakable fates is at work again. Soon, all those within its boundaries will be engulfed by a dark tide from which few have escaped.

Was really enjoying this book till his bullshit description of autistic people. What‘s this bullshit 1 in 6 lead normal lives stuff! It might be fiction but that‘s enough for it to be done and dusted for me. Didn‘t even make it to page 100. I shall not be picking up another Koontz book 🤮 if anyone knows good horror that doesn‘t throw autistics under the bus like that please let me know

Let‘s give this a go. Feeling like a good horror to read.

Literary_Siren How is it so far? 4y
Darklunarose @Literary_Siren only on chapter three, not too bad so far, so at least it‘s not dragging the beginning. I have not read any of his books before from memory so it‘s a good introduction. 4y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Reading another one I‘m not quite liking...thinking about dnfing and starting Dark Matter because, of course, it and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo just came off my hold list. Decisions, decisions.

Mccall0113 It took me forever to finish. Wish I didn't wast the time. DM and Hugo are 1000x better! 6y
vivastory I DNFed this. It was an intriguing premise, the execution was horrible. 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit I dnf‘d this one. My husband didn‘t, and now thinks Dean Koontz is an idiot! He hated it. 6y

1. Tagged, it wasn't that scary but I don't tend to read scary books lol.
2. When I was a child I thought it was Event horizon but I've seen it since and don't think that. Probably The Hills Have Eyes (2006). One scene was scarred on my brain for months.
3. When I almost died from my miscarriage. Lost half my blood volume in a few hours time. ER doc even sent me home.

corycatelyn Holy shit @melyndarae ! I'm sorry that happened to you 😕 Also I can't answer any of these because I don't do scary 😂 6y

melyndarae @corycatelyn Thanks. I had a blighted ovum, so there was no baby. That helped make it not as hard. But it was super scary in the hospital. The 2nd time I went in there were suddenly like 6 people in the room and they rushed me to a cardiac room bc my bp kept dropping. Very scary experience. 6y

melyndarae @AshleyHoss820 Thanks. It's been just over a year. 6y
corycatelyn @melyndarae I can imagine. As a nurse we don't like low BPs 😉 6y

JessClark78 So sorry that happened to you. ☹️ 6y
melyndarae @JenlovesJT47 @JessClark78 Thanks 💜. @corycatelyn Yea, especially since I normally have high bp. Although it levels out when I'm pregnant. 6y

I am in total agreement with Winny.

"If you were shy and didn't know what to say and felt you didn't belong anywhere, books were a way to lead another life, a way to be someone else entirely, to be anyone at all."

At the car dealership waiting for 4 new tyres and wheel alignment. About to start #24in48

I look a bit grumpy here 😂 I'm trying not to squint, because the sun is in my eyes.

LeahBergen I thought it was next weekend? 🤔 6y
LazyOwl @LeahBergen 😂 OMG I had it in my diary for this weekend. Must have put in the wrong dates, I must be keen! 6y
LazyOwl I wondered why no-one else had posted. It's all making sense now @LeahBergen 6y

For bookclub this month we need to read a book with a number in the title. Trying to decide which one I should read, I'm leaning towards 77 Shadow Street.

I have been listening to this audio book since August. With all of the great books I got for Christmas waiting to be read, I had to admit I haven't been trying very hard. Dean Koontz books should be fun and quick. This one never grabbed me.
