On the Camino
On the Camino | Jason
6 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
The Camino de Santiago is a 500 mile, historic pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. It is walked by thousands every year, both Christians and non-believers. To mark his 50th birthday, the brilliant Norwegian cartoonist Jason decided that walking the length of the Camino was what he needed to do. On the Camino is Jasons memoir of that trek 32 days and 500 miles from St. Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre, observing with the eye of an artist, chronicling both the good (people, conversations) and the bad (blisters, bedbugs). Full of quiet incidents, odd encounters, small triumphs, and the occasional setback, On the Camino is the latest graphic novel by a master cartoonist.

Pickpick

A memoir in comics format by the extremely introverted Jason—pseudonym for Norwegian cartoonist John Arne Saeternoy—about walking the Camino de Santiago when he turned 50. Jason‘s anthropomorphic animals in b&w clear-line art depict experiences that remind me of my own adventures on walking trips. Wonderful flights of imagination: insights into what goes on inside a brilliant mind with nothing to do but walk and think. Quiet and lovely.

Lindy PS. While I loved this, my sweetie found it kind of boring. It‘s not for everyone. 5y

In San Justo de la Vega I discover that I have a hole in one of my socks. In Astorga I buy a pair of sports socks for 21 euros and a Ryanair plane ticket from Santiago to Barcelona, which costs 23 euros.

Tanisha_A Sad! 5y
Lindy @Tanisha_A I don‘t find it sad, but it certainly is weird to think of the two things being of roughly the same value. 5y

I haven‘t walked the Camino, but I have walked long-distance paths in that part of the world. This memoir is bringing back a lot of memories.

Just starting my very first graphic novel and it‘s about one of my favourite things- walking the Camino- something on my bucket list!

MommyWantsToReadHerBook I'm also becoming a bit obsessed with the Camino! This book looks so fun! 6y
Miss_Kim Very sweet and simple. I‘d have liked it more with at least some ‘spiritual ‘ depth. 💕 6y

I bought the book for my parents who walked the Camino in ‘06. Also pictured @BookishMarginalia . The owner of the house we are staying in was an art gallery owner and it amuses me to take pictures of Glori in front of the Gold Digger paintings.

Hollie She looks really happy here! 😀 6y
julesG Wonderful picture of Gloria! @BookishMarginalia 6y

JamieArc Is this a children‘s book about the Camino, or a graphic novel? I did the Camino in 2014 and would love to get my hands on that book! 6y
Eyelit @JamieArc it‘s a graphic novel kinda memoir. Jason usually does graphic novels with anthropomorphic characters 😃 6y
JamieArc @Eyelit Cool! Going to definitely search this out! Thanks! 6y
