The Opposite of Love
The Opposite of Love | Julie Buxbaum
5 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
With perfect pitch for the humor and heartbreak of everyday life, debut author Julie Buxbaum has fashioned a heroine who will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has loved and lost and loved again. When twenty-nine-year-old Manhattan attorney Emily Haxby ends her happy relationship just as her boyfriend is about to propose, she cant explain to even her closest friends why she did it. But somewhere beneath her independent exterior, Emily knows her breakup with Andrew has less to do with him and more to do with...her. Its like you get pleasure out of breaking your own heart, her best friend Jess tells her. As the holidays loom and Emily contemplates whether she made a huge mistake, the rest of her world begins to unravel. Shes assigned to a multimillion-dollar lawsuit where she must defend the very values she detests by a boss who cant keep his hands to himself her Grandpa Jack, the person she cares most about in the world, is losing it, while her emotionally distant father has left her to cope aloneand underneath it all, memories of her deceased mother remind her that love doesnt last forever. How this brave young woman finally faces the fears that have long haunted her is the great achievement of this marvelous first novel, written with authority, grace, and wisdom.

Pickpick

This is the first adult novel of Julie Buxbaum‘s I‘ve read, and I have to say I think I prefer her young adult novels. Not that this one was bad, but the three YA books of hers I‘ve read were better.

“Last night, I dreamt that I chopped Andrew up into a hundred little pieces, like a Benihana chef, and ate them, one by one.”

Okay, I cheated a little. There‘s a prologue to chapter 1, but this opening line of chapter 1 is just too good!

Reader probs: Just finished a Julie Buxbaum novel and was reading about her other books in her author bio. Saw one called “The Opposite of Love” and was like, I should add this to my To Be Read. Went to add it, saw I had already added it and laughed to myself. IMAGINE THE LOOK ON MY FACE when I went to pull my next read out of the library pile I got this week and saw “The Opposite of Love” in the pile. 😂 Yeah, that book is here at my house.

Ruthiella Too funny! 😅 I also have gone to add a book to my TBR list and discovered it was already there. 4y

#Chloe is half asleep and confused as to why I‘m shoving a coffee cup in her face. 😹 (It‘s for the internet, Chloe!!)
Trying to get a few more minutes of #24B4Monday in between chores and errands - my son is having surgery tomorrow and I feel like there is so much to do first!
