Not everyone who's missing is lostWhen two teenage girls go missing along the Irish border, forensic psychologist Paula Maguire has to return to the hometown she left years before. Swirling with rumour and secrets, the town is gripped by fear of a serial killer. But the truth could be even darker. Not everyone who's lost wants to be foundSurrounded by people and places she tried to forget, Paula digs into the cases as the truth twists further away. What's the link with two other disappearances from 1985? And why does everything lead back to the town's dark past- including the reasons her own mother went missing years before? Nothing is what it seemsAs the shocking truth is revealed, Paula learns that sometimes, it's better not to find what you've lost.

I have just unexpectedly lost my dad, the person I was closest to, and I am totally devastated. I feel I need to start reading soon again to slowly find my way out of this horrible state I‘m in. I don‘t really know what kind of books would be good to read. Figured my go to, murder mysteries, is not the right thing. Any thoughts?

dabbe I am so sorry you lost your father. Thinking of you. 🧡💜💛
What helped me through when my mom died was reading humorous works (A WALK IN THE WOODS by Bill Bryson comes to mind. Maybe essays by Dave Barry or Laurie Notaro; I always love their articles). If you want to read mystery, maybe read some “cozy“ ones would help. 🤗

Andrew65 Sorry to have missed this, and so sorry to hear what happened. You have my full condolences and sympathies. When my mum died I went to books to help myself escape whilst I came to terms with things. For me strangely it was a crime book, and it was the first book in the Roy Grace series by Peter James. 14mo

Mehso-so

This was a decent enough crime procedural set in a fictional Irish border town involving missing girls, the Irish-American adoption racket and the aftermath of the Troubles. Bit slow to start, too many characters and a bit rushed at the end. But I'm guessing the series gets better as it goes on so I might try the second one in due course.

Pickpick

This is the first book that I read for 2018. This series takes place in Northern Ireland. Lots of history of political issues of the north and south Ireland in the 80‘s. Characters are well-drawn and the story of the missing girls is well-plotted with lots of twists and turns that kept things interesting. Loved this book and was sure that I wanted to continue this series.
