pickI read this one with my fifth graders. This is a brutally honest portrayal of the experiences of young boys (under 18) who fought in the Civil War. It is comprised of primary sources that have been researched by the author. Many photos are included as well.
The Civil War was the last time that “drummer boys” were used by the US military. These boys (some as young as nine years old) communicated vital information about troop maneuvers during battle and often drew fire because of it. Pictured above is 12-year-old Johnny Clem, who earned the nickname “Johnny Shiloh” after two of his drums were shot out of his hands at the battle of Shiloh.
