The Poets' Corner
The Poets' Corner: The One-And-Only Poetry Book for the Whole Family | John Lithgow
8 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
From listening to his grandmother recite epic poems from memory to curling up in bed while his father read funny verses, award-winning actor John Lithgow grew up with poetry. Ever since, John has been an enthusiastic seeker of poetic experience, whether reading, reciting, or listening to great poems. The wide variety of carefully selected poems in this book provides the perfect introduction to appeal to readers new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Dylan Thomas are just a few names among Lithgow's comprehensive list of poetry masters. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud." This unique package provides a multimedia poetry experience with a bonus MP3 CD of revelatory poetry readings by John and the familiar voices of such notable performers as Eileen Atkins, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Billy Connolly, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Lynn Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Gary Sinise, and Sam Waterston. Every reader will enjoy reciting or listening to these poems with the entire family, appreciating how each one comes to life through the spoken word in this superlative poetry collection.

This is a great collection of poetry. It covers so many different poets. It‘s part poetry collection, part biography of the poets, and part autobiography of John Lithgow. It‘s a joy to listen to, and bringing in his friends to read the poems themselves is the real icing on the cake. He has Billy Connolly read the Scottish poets, Irish actors read the Irish poets, Americans throughout. It was just great. I highly recommend this.

GingerAntics This book is like John Lithgow took the list of @TheBookHippie‘s favourite poets, added in more of his own, and then called up his friends to have a poetry party. For being the only Joetry 2022 book of this year, it was the perfect choice. #PoetsCorner #JohnLithgow #Joetry #Joetry2022 @CBee @Chrissyreadit 1y
TheBookHippie Oooooo!!! 1y
CBee Sounds lovely! John Lithgow can do no wrong in my book 😊 1y

Chrissyreadit So this should be an audio book vs book in hand? 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I think you‘d enjoy it. 1y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit it would probably still be lovely in hand, if I hadn‘t been rushing to finish before the end of the day/year, I probably would have done both. The audiobook certainly elevates the experience. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I can‘t wait to see what you think of it. I swear it covered every poet you listed for me way back when (I have it saved on my phone as The Book Hippie Poetry Hour 😂) and then some. This is probably the place I should have started back then… plus it has the added bonus of John Lithgow. 1y
kspenmoll I hope I can find it to listen too. 1y

Progress has been made… and one more day to check off my fourth goal. To think, I wasn‘t sure I‘d be able to check off any of these.

This beautiful description by Lithgow of himself is poetic in and of itself. It certainly gets you thinking.

CBee @GingerAntics he‘s the best! 2y
GingerAntics @CBee he‘s brought friends along to read the poems. He does the intro for each poem, but a different actor does each poem. It‘s like he‘s sharing the poetry with friends. A poetry party maybe. 2y
CBee @GingerAntics I would totally go to a poetry party! 2y
GingerAntics @CBee right? That‘s my kind of party. 2y

I had no idea Joe Baden had a stutter. 2020 was #2020AdventureInPoetry. I think 2021 is going to be Poetry for Joe 2021. Or maybe Poetry for Joey 2021. 🤣😂🤣💙💙💙

Who knew John Lithgow had his own poetry anthology? Probably not what @julesG @CarolynM and @Crazeedi had in mind...but does this count? 🤣😂🤣

julesG Sure 4y
GingerAntics @julesG 🤣😂🤣 I‘m having a hard time deciding if I go with his anthology or “Dumpty” first. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG do anthologies usually include bio on the poet, one poem, some explanation, and on to the next poet? Clearly, I am clueless. 4y
See All 16 Comments
julesG Depends on the anthology. It's been some time since I had a look at Norton's. They might contain more than one poem. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG but just having one isn‘t uncommon. I guess I‘ve never done an anthology. I had to have a short story anthology for a class once...that didn‘t come out until almost the end of the class. That logically had one entry per author. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG that anthology went by year as well. It seems all I can get digitally (my best bet until after we move) seems to be by year. Am I weird for thinking 5 year spans or even a decade would make more sense? 4y
julesG Just one is not uncommon. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG oh okay. That makes me feel much better. This was the ONLY anthology that actually let me see the poetry in the sample. Everything else has so much intro stuff, you don‘t even get to see what an entry looks like...even in single author books of poetry. 4y
julesG The uni library might have a Norton's. I know that mine has, but I haven't set foot into the uni library for years. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG I‘ll have to check at work tomorrow. 4y
CarolynM It absolutely counts! I don't think anthologies usually include information about the poet, they are usually just collections of poems. How many poems per poet depends on the reputation/output of the poet and the taste of the anthologist. Similarly the grouping of the poems, some are chronological others are arranged by theme. 4y
GingerAntics @CarolynM okay, so they tend to be like the short story anthology I once had. Good to know what to expect. That link was endlessly helpful. I‘ve added several anthologies to my wish list now. I even found a lovely anthology I‘ll be reading as soon as I‘m done with Leaves of Grass called Poems for a World Gone to Sh*t. 🤣😂🤣 4y
Crazeedi @GingerAntics oh this one looks terrific! I would definitely count this as a good one! 4y
CarolynM 😂👍 4y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi if nothing else, it will take the humour of the progressive commercials and turn it in poetry. lol 4y

This is such a fun audio read. Lithgow narrates a huge collection of poems by favorite poet. they are in alphabetical order so it skips through time and style beautifully. Each poem is narrated by another famous person. I‘m not a fan of poetry, but this is the perfect way for me to experience and appreciate it.
