Maeve's Times
Maeve's Times: In Her Own Words | Maeve Binchy
6 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
Five decades of selected writings from the Irish Times by the beloved and best-selling author, filled with her hallmark humor, candor, and wisdom-a timeless gift to her legion of fans. Maeve Binchy once confessed: "As someone who fell off a chair not long ago trying to hear what they were saying at the next table in a restaurant, I suppose I am obsessively interested in what some might consider the trivia of other people's lives." She was an accidental journalist, yet from the beginning, her writings reflected the warmth, wit, and keen human interest that readers would come to love in her fiction. From the royal wedding to boring airplane companions, Samuel Beckett to Margaret Thatcher, "senior moments" to life as a waitress, Maeve's Times gives us wonderful insight into a changing Ireland as it celebrates the work of one of our best-loved writers in all its diversity-revealing her characteristic directness, laugh-out-loud humor, and unswerving gaze into the true heart of a matter.

Happy March!! This was wonderful collection of some of Maeve Binchy‘s articles submitted to the Irish Times from the 1960s through the 2000‘s. She was so well-travelled and I loved reading that. I loved her thoughts on Margaret Thatcher and on the Royal family. She attended three royal weddings! It was fun to read her thoughts on what is now old news. What a treasure she was!

Suet624 Oooh, sounds interesting. 3y
marleed @Suet624 I was somehow comforted by this book. It‘s such a great way to honor Maeve, but honestly reading articles that were current at the time written was just what I needed right now. 3y
Suet624 Yea, I understand. 3y

robinb @LeahBergen @CarolynM Update: I decided to go with Firefly Summer although at 653 pages I might regret it. 😳😳🤪🤣 4y
CarolynM As I recall it's an easy read with plenty of happenings to keep you interested. Hope you enjoy it🙂 4y
robinb @CarolynM thanks. I‘ve read one or two of hers (it‘s been so long I can‘t remember their titles 🤪), but I know I enjoyed her writing. 4y

Someone else read it ( sorry, I don‘t remember who ) , but I didn‘t see anyone from your questionnaire group. I think it‘s Christmas related stories. (edited) 5y
