This chilling new mystery in the New York Times bestselling series by Charles Finch takes readers back to Charles Lenoxs very first case and the ruthless serial killer who would set him on the course to become one of Londons most brilliant detectives. London, 1850: A young Charles Lenox struggles to make a name for himself as a detective...without a single case. Scotland Yard refuses to take him seriously and his friends deride him for attempting a profession at all. But when an anonymous writer sends a letter to the paper claiming to have committed the perfect crimeand promising to kill againLenox is convinced that this is his chance to prove himself. The writers first victim is a young woman whose body is found in a naval trunk, caught up in the rushes of a small islets in the middle of the Thames. With few clues to go on, Lenox endeavors to solve the crime before another innocent life is lost. When the killers sights are turned toward those whom Lenox holds most dear, the stakes are raised and Lenox is trapped in a desperate game of cat and mouse. In the tradition of Sherlock Holmes, this newest mystery in the Charles Lenox series pits the young detective against a maniacal murderer who would give Professor Moriarty a run for his money.

🌟🌟🌟.5 This 11th book in a series is actually a prequel, allowing me to try the series w/ a recent book. Initially I found MC Charles Lenox a bit cold. He's a young aristocrat trying his hand as a private detective. The main mystery was interesting as 2 women are found dead & there wasn't much science in 1850. I warmed up to a Lenox & his manservant/friend Graham by the end. I would read earlier books. #bookspinbonanza TheAromaofBooks

BookishMe I got to know this series when the prequel was released, so I had a choice to read this or start the series proper from the first book. Glad I went with the prequel. Since I have read up to Book 4 (?) I greatly enjoyed the comfortable world of Victorian London with Lennox and Co. 5y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I may have to try these again. I read the first book and just didn't click with it. 5y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks I didn't love it, but by the end I enjoyed it well enough. I'm not rushing out to read the rest but I might give books 1 & 2 a shot to see if it sticks. 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks I think they can also be read without following the order. If you both don't mind skipping the first title, I particularly enjoyed the plot of the 2nd in the series 5y
TheAromaofBooks Good to know @BookishMe!! 5y

A slow start, but it really picked up the pace at the end! And, this was a lovely look into his “youth” and how he started as a private detective.

My commute listen- only 7.5 hours so almost done. This is a Charles Lenox Mystery prequel to the regular series when Lenox is only 24 years old and unmarried. Meet Hugo and Graham early on and see the beginnings of their relationships. Nice plotting and great narrator in James Langton.

This is my new answer for anything I don‘t want to do: “The duties of that position would defeat me completely”

There‘s something about the Holmes/Watson Victorian mystery type tales that readers can‘t get enough of. Like my handbags, I‘m not into a cheap knock-off. So when this relationship is done WELL, I‘m sold. 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ for fast-paced detective sleuthing at its best. This is my first introduction to the Charles Lenox series which opens in 1850 London, England. Well-plotted, this mystery is engaging and I‘m curious to see where the next ten books in the series goes!
