⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Short stories with one commonality: someone who left Kentucky but yearns to return. Tonally, these stories complement each other very well. He created down-and-out characters in fascinating, often endearing ways. I‘m drawn to Offutt, because I, too was born and raised in the Bluegrass State and love the references. Definitely seeking out his backlist. He attended the illustrious Iowa Writers‘ Workshop, so that‘s an automatic plus for me!

Another rare short story collection where I enjoyed every one of them. Offutt definitely has a knack for writing raw stories that draw you in. Can‘t wait to check out more of his work.

SandyW Have you read Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy? It is such a beautifully written novel (warning: contains horrific violence), it almost feels like a love letter to the Carolinas. 6y

Kaye @VinceReads I‘ve never been fortunate enough to live in the South. Just visit on vacations. I can never figure out why they are so much better at storytelling than anyplace else. I can‘t think of one Southern Writer that I have disliked. (edited) 6y

Started this one at lunch today. First time reading Offutt, anyone read him before?

Bookish_AF I enjoyed his memoir but haven‘t read any of his fiction. I‘ll be interested to hear how it was! 6y
