Mansfield Park Revisited
Mansfield Park Revisited: A Jane Austen Entertainment | Joan Aiken
8 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
In Aiken's sequel to Jane Austen's complex and fascinating novel, after heroine Fanny Price marries Edmund Bertram, they depart for the Caribbean, and Fanny's younger sister Susan moves to Mansfield Park as Lady Bertram's new companion. Surrounded by the familiar cast of characters from Jane Austen's original, and joined by a few charming new characters introduced by the author, Susan finds herself entangled in romance, surprise, scandal, and redemption. Aiken's diverting tale gives the reader interesting speculation on how the Crawfords, whose winning personalities were marred by an amoral upbringing, might have turned out, and Jane Austen's morality tale takes new directions with an unexpected and somewhat controversial ending. "A lovely read-and you don't have to have read Mansfield Park to enjoy it."-Woman's Own "Her sense of time and place is impeccable."-Publishers Weekly "An excellent sequel...remarkably effective and very funny." -Evening Standard

Excellent #bookmail today!
The peacock feather is from Flannery O'Conner's Andalusia, her home in Millidgeville, Georgia. She was a big fan of the peacock and had a bunch.

LeahBergen How cool! 🦚 And I have this diary, too 👍 1y
batsy Ooh yes to that poetry diary! I keep looking lovingly at mine 😂 1y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen @batsy Between Litsy, GR and Net Galley, I was starting to have trouble keeping track of what was due when. This seemed like a lovely solution - all book tracking and nothing else ☺️ 1y
Jess_Read_This Oh wow! That peacock feather is a treasure! 1y
Aimeesue @Jess_Read_This I have five or six that I bought there, all in a vase on the mantle. Well, not a vase so much as a wine bottle shaped like a black cat, but same-same, right? 😂 1y

This was a quick and entertaining Mansfield sequel, even though I felt some of the characters didn't really track. But I did love this take on Susan, who had her sister Fanny's good moral sense with a great deal more spunk and backbone. I can say that I saw the ending coming and still felt WTF about it; but somehow that didn't ruin it for me. This was just a fun, fanfic-y look at a novel I love, and I was here for it! #PemberLittens

Oh my gosh, life is crazy this week!!! I miss all of you - just haven't had much scrolling time!!!

This was a pleasant little read - a sequel to Mansfield Park. It honestly wasn't super gripping, and Aiken kills off Sir Thomas (my favorite character if I'm honest haha) on the first page, but it was fun to see where she took everyone. I'm not completely sure I agree with the romance, but if you're looking for a relaxing MP sequel for ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) #PemberLitten reading, you may enjoy this one, which focuses mostly on Fanny's younger sister, Susan. @sprainedbrain

This one, which I actually finished on Wednesday, put me at 916/2500pgs for my #AwesomeApril goal @Andrew65

TheAromaofBooks @tracey38 - It's so funny how I find myself actually missing people on here when I don't have time to scroll through my feed!!! But I only work seasonally, so this is just a busy time of year & I roll with it haha I'll catch up with everyone in June! 😂 3y
tracey38 @TheAromaofBooks it's true. I do miss people when I can't scroll. I've been working a lot of overtime and have just been so tired when I get home. 3y

I finally finished! What a surprise ending... Fanny and Edmund ended up together. Who could have imagined! 🤣😂 All kidding aside, this was an interesting read, and definitely had me pondering what Austen was trying to get at writing such a heroine as Fanny. #pemberlittens

Mehso-so

I liked it, but I'm not sure I was totally sold on it. At about 2/3 of the way through, and I realized there was still so much left to resolve with so little of the book remaining. The ending definitely felt rushed (not totally unlike the original) and feelings and that had definitely not been explored besides the very barest of hints, were dumped on the reader. I would still recommend this to Austen fans, but get ready for some hasty resolutions.

I'm three pages from the end of my book... but I'm still sick 😷 on to the next I guess.

The weather right now is gross and wet and I'm home sick on my day off. Clearly the best thing to do is read a Jane Austen adaptation.

GripLitGrl Enjoy!👍 6y
