Obscura | Joe Hart
She's felt it before...the fear of losing control. And it's happening again. In the near future, an aggressive and terrifying new form of dementia is affecting victims of all ages. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms are disturbing. Dr. Gillian Ryan is on the cutting edge of research and desperately determined to find a cure. She's already lost her husband to the disease, and now her young daughter is slowly succumbing as well. After losing her funding, she is given the unique opportunity to expand her research. She will travel with a NASA team to a space station where the crew has been stricken with symptoms of a similar inexplicable psychosis--memory loss, trances, and violent, uncontrollable impulses.Crippled by a secret addiction and suffering from creeping paranoia, Gillian finds her journey becoming a nightmare as unexplainable and violent events plague the mission. With her grip weakening on reality, she starts to doubt her own innocence. And she's beginning to question so much more--like the true nature of the mission, the motivations of the crew, and every deadly new secret space has to offer.Merging thrilling science-fiction adventure with mind-bending psychological suspense, Wall Street Journal bestselling author Joe Hart explores both the vast mysteries of outer space and the even darker unknown that lies within ourselves.

From psychological/suspense thriller, mystery, science fiction, to climate fiction, dystopian and even a touch of horror, this book ticks off all those boxes. Throw into the mix a well developed, character driven plot, refreshing setting and intelligent, smooth as butter writing and you have a gripping, intoxicating, unputdownable and unpredictable read that I absolutely devoured. Brilliant!!! A favourite of 2019! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 stars
I loved this audiobook. The narrator was amazing; made me feel like I was trapped with Gillian - the constant fear, claustrophobia, and doubt. The story combines sci-fi, horror, and suspense into a gripping adventure. As much as I thought I knew about how it would turn out, I was still surprised.

This was a decent enough thriller, but I didn't love it. The writing style wasn't anything amazing, and a lot of the story beats (if not the specific plot points) were predictable. But it was entertaining enough for me to finish, so I'll round up to ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Ever since I finished reading The Gone World I've been searching for another book with that mix of mind-bending sci-fi & truly disturbing horror. This probably won't be that book, but the description sounds promising.

5/5🌟: This book is so addicting! It is a total mind trip. If you like sci-fi, READ THIS. If you like thrillers, READ THIS. If you like a book that messes with your mind, READ THIS BOOK. I hope to read more Joe Hart books in the future.

The leading researcher into the newest dementia plaque, driven by the loss of her husband and signs that her daughter maybe next, delves herself deeply in hopes of finding a cure against the newest disease. Joe Hart developed well rounded cast of characters in this thrilling science fiction mystery. His organic way of binding both genres kept me reading all night. Great read! #netgalley #arc

This book had some interesting theme combinations. I liked the exploration of memory and personality and the importance of identity. I would have liked more exploration on the science end of things. The ideas were great, but the execution was average and the ending was predictable.

GarthRanzz I was so excited for this and was enjoying my ARC until they reached Mars. I haven‘t picked it up since and I‘ve already gotten the final release copy. 2y

I won a free copy of this book through Goodreads! I didn't really think those things were for real! I will have to hone my review writing skills. Some of you write the most beautiful reviews and I'm over here like "it was good." All giddy and excited now! It's a sci/fi thriller and it looks like it could be good.

Bklover I‘m with you on the review writing skills!!! Mine tend to use the word “amazing” a lot! 2y
Karkar I am glad I am not the only one who feels like they have subpar review writing skills. 😊 2y

When you‘re reading a new book and thoroughly enjoying it then stumble across a mention of your favorite author. Yeah that. King‘s “The Jaunt” was one of the first things that came to mind while I was reading Obscura then Hart full on mentions it. I love that kind of literary coincidence. Just made this read all that much better.

Bkwurm The Jaunt still haunts me! 2y
GarthRanzz @Bkwurm It‘s one of my favorite short stories of King‘s. Especially because it stays with you. 2y

Hit with a snow storm and cold front for the weekend, plans to go back to Alpha Coffee got tossed out the window. Instead we settled for a cozy weekend in with a scrumptious breakfast of poached eggs on avocado toast and yogurt, fruit and granola. Of course I still got to “visit” Alpha with the mug I received for Christmas. I also took advantage and jumped into the Obscura ARC. Really good so far!

Haven‘t done one of these for a while
1. Usually in bed or on the couch
2. Bookmark but I generally read ebooks
3. I have to end at a chapter
4. Depends. Usually a drink (water or coffee) and sometimes a snack but I don‘t read during meals
5. Yes to either, usually a TV show in the background
6. No more than two normally
7. Anywhere but love reading at a coffee hangout
8. Silently
9. Neither
10. Like new
11. Never

Bkwurm If you don't write in books, and keep your books like new, how do you feel about used books with marginalia? Does it bother you? Asking for a friend. 🙃 2y
GarthRanzz @Bkwurm I don‘t mind it when I find it in used books at all. Especially older ones. I like the history it conveys. I just come from a generation that wasn‘t taught to read and mark the book with a highlighter or notes. 2y
Bkwurm Me too. I like feeling that I'm in conversation with the author and the previous reader(s). 2y

GarthRanzz @Bkwurm Exactly. A little snippet of history. And I like books that use it to further the story, like J.J. Abrams‘ “S”. 2y
Bkwurm I haven't read that one. I'll have to add it to my TBR list. 2y
GarthRanzz @Bkwurm It‘s good. In that twisted way that Abrams has. Definitely get a copy of the slipcased version if it is available. 2y
