Great topic! Difficult to choose only 3! Though not necessarily iconic, Cork O‘Connor (protégée of old Anishinabbe Henry Meloux) typifies human justice through his bravery and tenacity. Hiawatha is a tragic hero, and though some may define Longfellow‘s characters as caricaturistic, other strong themes balance it out. The last is Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of Sûreté du Québec, in Louise Penny‘s series-humble and selfless w. strong convictions.

Eggs P.S. I grew up in a town world-famous for its national monument, peace pipes, Pipestone art/jewelry, quarries that are still used by tribes today, and an annual outdoor theatre presentation of Hiawatha. I was in it as an “extra” as a child-so exciting. #TLT @dabbe (edited) 8mo

Got the first glimpse of the Indian culture reading this song. Feel free to recommend something as good as this one.

MissHel How many recs are you looking for? I‘ll start with Firekeeper‘s Daughter, Braiding Sweetgrass, and The Great Vanishing Act. These are some really good (and popular!) steps into indigenous culture. But please, don‘t stop here! 2y

This was amazingly good (I only saw the movie version based on this, I'm terrible, I know)...although, be aware that this is a historical fiction and should not be held at 100% for it's accuracy. It's heavy on stereotypes.

RayHallucinogen I've been reading a lot of James Fenimore Cooper lately and getting more interested in Mohicans, Iroquois, Pawnees, and Siouxes. Thank you for the helping tips. I'll look for some of those on the Internet. 6mo

We really enjoy reading/watching American Indigenous stories/history. Hiawatha has become one of my favorites.

Although, native books and movies are difficult to find (my family doesn't mail-order anymore. In support of local business).

AnnCrystal @RayHallucinogen Killers of the Flower Moon was truly good. Haven't found a DVD of the movie yet. I did read the book. Incredible storytelling. Written like a perfect fictional mystery...Horrifying that it was a true story. A Masterpiece in storytelling. (edited) 6mo
