Yet Ursa is a vital + strong woman, with a love of life that encompasses sex + music as well as men. The story of slavery + control haunts this book 5*
pickWhen the novel opens, Blues singer Ursa is in the hospital after being attacked by her husband. She has lost a baby and the ability to get pregnant again. Thus begins a spiraling narrative exploring how Black women are haunted by generations of sexual & physical violence. It is brutal, unflinching, scorching, intimate & brave. There is no sugar coating. The language is harsh. TW for everything. It is terrible & true & was ahead of its time.

While I think it was well written, I can‘t say I enjoyed it. It‘s a brutal read. I‘m going to quote a bit of one of the blurbs which describes it perfectly.
