Pickpick

A powerful piece of writing that expresses the experience of life for a black woman in America. Ursa is a blues singer whose grandmother + grt g/mother were victim of rape by their same slave owner. Ursa is assaulted by her husband so badly that she cannot have children, + men seek to own her. Yet Ursa is a vital + strong woman, with a love of life that encompasses sex + music as well as men. The story of slavery + control haunts this book 5*

Tamra Sounds rough reading, but worthwhile. 6mo

Pickpick

When the novel opens, Blues singer Ursa is in the hospital after being attacked by her husband. She has lost a baby and the ability to get pregnant again. Thus begins a spiraling narrative exploring how Black women are haunted by generations of sexual & physical violence. It is brutal, unflinching, scorching, intimate & brave. There is no sugar coating. The language is harsh. TW for everything. It is terrible & true & was ahead of its time.

Soubhiville This was a rough read. 2y
merelybookish @Soubhiville Absolutely! Not an easy read at all. But powerful! 2y

Audiobaking as we dig out from yesterday's storm. Ended up with quite a little snow drift on the verandah.
Just started tagged book. I've been curious to read Gayl Jones for a while. It's pretty grim so far.

robinb Oh my goodness!! 😳 But how pristine and beautiful. Stay warm! 2y

Mehso-so

Another book chosen for my topics bookclub, for the prompt “released the year you were born.”

While I think it was well written, I can‘t say I enjoyed it. It‘s a brutal read. I‘m going to quote a bit of one of the blurbs which describes it perfectly.

“A fiercely concocted story, harsh and perfectly told… Original, superbly imagined, nothing about this book is simple or easily digested…” -Darryl Pinckney, The New Republic

CW- abuse of every kind

Soubhiville @TheAromaofBooks this was my August #bookspin. 3y

BrownGirlReading Excellent book though. Very powerful! 6y
ReadosaurusText @BrownGirlReading I am about halfway through now. As I was told, it is a tough read emotion-wise, but I completely understand why it is such an important book. 6y
