Dopo | Koethi Zan

This book had bad reviews; although it wasn‘t very realistic (survivor will not go looking for the abuser unless for absolute revenge) & I have questions unanswered, it was still very unnerving. Several things in the story reminded me very much of the real story of Colleen Stan, who was kidnapped & tortured for 7 years by Cameron & Janice Hooker in Chico, CA during the 70s. He kept her bound, in a box under the bed, with a special box that he ⬇️

JenniferEgnor kept over her head which was insulated inside so that no one would hear her scream. Before Colleen, there was another victim that he kidnapped, tortured and murdered, but that was never found: Marie Elizabeth Spannhake. Cameron was never found guilty of murder; Janice got off in exchange for information. The story was made famous via Unsolved Mysteries; lifetime movie ‘The Girl in the Box‘; book ‘The Perfect Victim‘, tv show Paranormal Witness (edited) 12mo
JenniferEgnor I want to reach out to the author and ask if her if any of her inspiration came from this true and horrific story. 12mo

My parents couldn‘t understand why I had moved to New York City so quickly in the first place, while I was still recovering and especially considering all my fears. They didn‘t understand how much safer it felt to have crowds of people right outside my door at all times. In New York City, I tried to explain, there is always someone to hear you scream.

JenniferEgnor ***I feel like this is a very good paragraph that tells us a lot about trauma. We should listen. 🤍 13mo

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Day 105th

Join the fun if you want!

More than 100 pages in and I'm just skimming and not paying much attention. I think I'm going to pass this on to my mom because it's just not for me. NEXT!!!

Chick hasn't been out of her apartment in 10 years, then flies cross country twice in 2 weeks and suddenly decides to follow a religious cult leader after she busted out of an S&M club dressed in a leather bustier and pants that belong to someone else? 🤔🤔🤔

ItsAnotherJen 🤔 you would think just leaving the apartment for a few groceries at the closest grocery store for her first venture out would of been traumatic enough..she really went all out 4y
IamIamIam @ItsAnotherJen Haha, jumping in the deep end with no floaties!! I bailed on this because it seemed dumb. It really lost my interest. 4y

Got this as a Christmas gift a bunch of years ago. I read the jacket blurb and I'm not sure this is going to be quite my speed... torture dungeon, BDSM... 🤔 I'll try but I'm predicting a DNF on this...

I had some false starts with this one but I decided to give it one more chance. I enjoyed it. I didn‘t see the very last twist coming.

Weiß jemand von euch was❓

Guckt mal, was ich mir als Nächstes Wegstrecken-Hörbuch entliehenen habe. ?

This sounded better in the synopsis than it actually turned out to be. For such a dark subject, I was bored some of the time whilst reading this.

The author never satisfyingly answered why it all happened, & it all felt very superficial. Shame, as it could have been great. 3 ⭐️

Ever read a book that just falls flat? This one did for me. Sarah was held captive in a cellar with three other women for three years. Her captor, professor and professional sadist, Jack, is now in prison but he keeps sending Sarah letters. The whole business is convoluted and kinda ridiculous. Sarah is underdeveloped- as are the rest of the characters. It‘s all sort of vague and dumb and I probably should have abandoned it. Big no.

TrishB Book had promise that never quite happened. 7y
TheLudicReader Yeah, @TrishB , it was a complete non-starter for me. 7y

Read on audio. This book was entertaining, but it could have been more. I liked the characters mostly. Some of the choices they made after their experiences frustrated me. I said out loud more than once, "Could you please call Jim (FBI)? Give him a *expletive* heads up!" Characters put themselves in danger in books all the time, but in this one, with their pasts, it was aggravating that they didn't at least try to back themselves up. 2⭐️

Starting this book today. It's one of those books that got buried after I bought it and I forgot about it until I moved things around last night and found it.
