This is a very emotional book that focuses on racism, the KKK, the death penalty and the deep flaws of our legal system. The writing is beautiful, the characters rough and real, and it's a very different look of life in 1940s America than the usual WW2 hero epic. But when Frank refers to his son as a casualty of the war, he is right is so many ways. Definitely recommending this one.Not an easy read, emotionally, but all more reason to read it.
I normally don't start book club reads so early (we're meeting on May 22nd), but I wanted to make sure I took my time with this book so that I can pause and cry when I need to.
#76for2018. Its 1943 and young Black lad Willie Jones is scheduled to die in the travelling electric chair. Told from multiple points of view but all the characters are linked to Willie. I'm not a big literary fiction reader but this is worth it.
This is an incredibly skilful and evocative historical novel set in Louisiana in the 40s - it is shocking yet subtle and such an important read. My full review is on my blog now! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received this e-arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A grim story of a 1940s electrocution, carried out for "raping" a white woman.
I was completely excited to see these holds arrive today at the library. 😁
Enjoying this today. Multi POV story about a Louisiana man‘s last day as he faces the electric chair for rape. Very atmospheric.
