Green Dolphin Country
Green Dolphin Country | Elizabeth Goudge
8 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
First published in 1944, 'Green Dolphin Country' is a magnificent epic of love, courage and selfless devotion, set in the Channel Islands and New Zealand in the nineteenth century, written with Elizabeth Goudge's inimitable feeling for the intricacies of human emotions. Though the book is fiction, and the characters not portraits, it is based on fact. A stunning tale of loss and self-sacrifice, it is truly one of the most memorable love stories of the last century.

I didn‘t love this brick of a book as much as I might have at some other point in my reading life. Romantic historical fiction isn‘t quite my jam at the moment. But it does feature a #bizarrelovetriangle! 😀

arlenefinnigan Good choice! 5y
Ruthiella @arlenefinnigan Thanks!😊 5y
Buechersuechtling Yeah, sometimes it‘s weird how one wonders how a book found its way on one‘s sub – even though week, months, years ago one felt a strong desire of taking it home and reading it. Strange, how one‘s own personality and preferences changes mostly unnoticed with the passage of time. 5y
Ruthiella @Buechersuechtling I do believe that some books and authors need to be read at the right time in one‘s reading life. This makes rereading precarious from time to time too!😀 5y

Ruthiella OMG I just read this book (and nobody reads Elizabeth Goudge any more!). Yeah William was a bit of a fool for sure. I think however in some ways he needed a strong partner to guide him? Maybe not quite as manipulative as Marianne... 5y
TheAromaofBooks I've been working my way through all of Goudge's books ever since I read and had my life upended by The Scent of Water. I haven't gotten to this one yet, though! 5y
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks This is one of my favorites. 😊 5y

First off, the setting (especially the parts on the island of Guernsey) was perfection! This is the story of two sisters who fall in love with the same boy when they were young and how that impacts their relationships and their entire lives. Some parts were frustrating for me, but there are a lot of great little nuggets about life in this story. Not a short book, but I do so love Goudge‘s writing!

LeahBergen This is one I‘ve been meaning to read for years. 6y
HotCocoaReads @LeahBergen It actually took me quite a while to get through—but I really liked it! 6y

Summer temps have arrived early 🕶☀️, but the mornings tend to be cooler, so I‘ve been enjoying quiet moments to myself. A time of reflection, journaling, dreaming and catching up on last minute reads before the end of the month.

I‘m kicking off the long weekend with a vintage edition of Elizabeth Goudge, a cup of White Cherry tea from Story Of My Tea and waiting anxiously for a baked camembert to come out of the oven.

What are you looking forward to this long weekend?

It‘s been a full day! After a few hours at a café (Mr. S and I were both busy working on projects), we stopped at an indie bookstore. Mr. S ended up with a stack of Stephen Kings & I found a foxed, but beautiful 1944 edition of ‘Green Dolphin Street‘ by Elizabeth Goudge; a favourite author of mine. Afterwards, we stopped for brunch. It‘s hard to pass up their rosemary flatbread with goat cheese, roasted peppers, caramelised onions and tomatoes.
