In books we experience all life vicariously

@LeahBergen I‘m loving this book! Your reviews often make me look for out of print books and authors and if I find one I‘m so excited they jump to the top of my TBR. The local library had one, nearly falling apart, copy of this 😇

charl08 I love this quote. 2y

I‘ve been spending a few of my weekend hours with this oldie and it‘s charming.

Jocelyn Irwin returns from the Boer War with an injured leg and no prospects and decides to pay an extended visit to his grandparents in a cathedral town. There he romps with his delightful niece and nephew, falls in love, and (almost accidentally) opens a bookshop in a mysterious little old house. It‘s pure froth and pure fun. 💚

vivastory So many Viragos! 👏 2y

The White Witch | Elizabeth Goudge
Pickpick

Goudge has a distinct way of creating very human characters. Villains are ordinary people led astray by the need for power and survival. Good characters are motivated by a deep love of something greater than themselves. Each have temptations and the power of choice. Characters, whether primary or secondary, are at times both pitiable and relatable, and make the reader question what we would do when faced with similar circumstances.

4.5/5 ⭐️s // what an absolutely enchanting story. I finished this book several weeks ago, and I find myself still missing the characters! perfect cozy, English atmosphere, engaging plot, and as I mentioned, incredible characters. one of my favorite reads of the year!

@BucklingBookshelves Here's my set! I also have a copy of Linnets & Valerians somewhere in the house, but I can't seem to locate it at the moment. 😀

BucklingBookshelves Oooh those are so nice! 😍 I definitely would have brought those home with me if I found them at a bookstore! (edited) 4y
BucklingBookshelves Also, I just printed out some reading log type sheets for 2020 and I made a bunch for authors I want to make a point of reading more of — Goudge was one of them. I‘ll have to see how many I get to this coming year!📚📚📚 4y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Now I'm curious! What other authors are on your list? 4y

LeahBergen Oh, pretty! 😍 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘m probably being over ambitious, but I picked 12 (including some illustrators) My general idea is to read at least one by each & then to see if I can manage to read several more by at least a couple of them during 2020... the others are Marguerite de Angeli, LM Montgomery, CS Lewis, Rumer Godden, Kate Seredy, Natalie Savage Carlson, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tasha Tudor, Barbara Cooney, & Trina Schart Hyman. 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves they are nothing fancy, but I can email them to you if you want and you could customize however you like! 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves P.S. I almost added George MacDonald, but I actually don‘t have too many of his books! I‘ll have to fix that. Lol 4y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Sure, send them along! I've never heard of a couple of these, so I'm curious to see what's out there. Next year, you definitely should include George MacDonald. I read a book of his during Holy Week every year, and they're wonderful. Slow-moving, for sure, but profound. 4y

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The 12 Days of Christmas aren‘t over yet, so I can keep reading Christmas books, right?! I‘ll take a break soon to share my 5🌟 reads of 2019, promise!

Book 7 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is another beautiful reprint of an older book — and another first title (for me) by an author who I want to read lots more of.📚

Lovely story, lovely illustrations, this is a book that will definitely be kept and re-read.

smilingshelves I have a set of five of her novels, but haven't read any yet. Maybe this is the year! 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves oh I‘m so curious which ones! I have The Little White Horse & Linnets and Valerians on my TBR — also Pilgrims Inn, but I think that‘s one of her adult titles. I know she wrote a lot more! 4y

Pickpick

I have been slowly collecting & reading all of Goudge's books. Her writing is stunningly beautiful, and her characters always well-drawn. I love how she chooses something from nature (in this case gentians) that become a gentle theme throughout. While this wasn't my favorite of hers - the young age of Stella made me somewhat uncomfortable although it was done well - it was still a quietly powerful read.
