The summer before Ivy's senior year is going to be golden-all bonfires, barbeques, and spending time with her best friends. For once, she will just get to be. No summer classes, none of Granddad's intense expectations to live up to the family name. For generations, the Milbourn women have lead extraordinary lives-and died young and tragically. Granddad calls it a legacy, but Ivy considers it a curse. Why else would her mother have run off and abandoned her as a child? But when her mother unexpectedly returns home with two young daughters in tow, all of the stories Ivy wove to protect her heart start to unravel. The very people she once trusted now speak in lies. And all of Ivy's ambition and determination cannot defend her against the secrets of the Milbourn past...

Beautiful scenery today while picking up clothes for a family.

It actually reminded me a bit of Practical Magic without the magic. I could envision the claustrophobic small town despite never having lived in one, and what it must feel like to live in that place with the weight of a family legacy on your shoulders (good or bad). I really related to Ivy's difficulty with the family baggage while also trying to establish her own life. I didn't always love the characters, but I appreciate what she did with them.

I enjoyed this book, but it left me wanting...more. I don't know what, maybe more about the family? More about the curse/gift? More about where the main character is going to go? Because without that 'more', I'm left with a spoiled teenager who hates her delinquent mother. Which is not to say it wasn't entertaining...I just wished there was MORE.

This family drama story is a good read. I wanted a little more depth and a hint of magic or more about the family curse but I still enjoyed the characters and the journey they took in the story.

Hey! I really liked this book! And it's only $1.99! Slightly dysfunctional family story to distract you from your own dysfunctional relatives this holiday weekend!

I enjoyed this coming of age tale featuring a strong heroine names Ivy. Parts of it broke my heart (mother/daughter relationship isn't great), but I liked Ivy's journey and all the literary references! A smart YA beach read.

This book is a fantastic young adult novel about discovering who you are and loving that person. At times, this book can be very emotional. If you love a great coming of age story with poetic references, this ones for you!

5 ?Easily my favorite YA novel of 2016 so far! Spotswood infuses her characters with dimension and diversity. It's a boldly feminist text that is just as entertaining as it is progressive. I cried.

Only Flaw: every character is BEAUTIFUL. Like a lot of YA it doesn't trust us to like "ugly" people.

Megabooks I purposefully seek out books with fat or unattractive characters. (note: not the same thing) If I have to read about one more slim wrist or set of stunning ocean blue eyes, I will throw my Kindle across the room. Not really, but I get frustrated. 8y
KatyAliceReads @Ebooksandcooks 🙌 👏🙌👏 My pet peeve is when a character is described as fitting conventional beauty standards, but has freckles or muddy brown hair, small breasts or is inordinately tall and we're supposed to be like OH they're so relatable! Not perfect at all! 8y
Megabooks I know right! I want someone really real. #sigh Plus as an overweight woman, I'd like to see more overweight women portrayed as beautiful and desirable. Not just skinny women with a large butt or slightly big thighs. Or worse, as the plucky sidekick. 8y

Megabooks I just read a short story where a skinny woman was repulsed that a man she was having an extramarital affair with was also seeing a woman with a double chin who doesn't exercise! The horror!!! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 8y
KatyAliceReads @Ebooksandcooks Have you read Eleanor & Park? 8y
Megabooks Yes! 😃😃😃 8y

Based on the description of this book, I thought it would be something supernatural. It's not, however, so that left me a little disappointed. Otherwise, it's a peek into a girl's life and the struggles she faces over a few weeks in the summer. A quick, easy read with a too-fast ending.

Seeing a lot of people doing this, thought I'd give it a go...

Megabooks The Virgin Suicides is fantastic. It's one of the few book/movie combos that is nearly identical. I actually recommend renting the movie because it won't piss you off. Coppola stayed very true to Eugenides! 8y

I have always enjoyed this author's writing style and storytelling. This book is not the exception, however I was not crazy about the lead character and Ithe ending felt rushed.

This book ticked all my boxes--romantic with family drama and big questions about fate and family legacy.
