I guess I‘ve been on a Scientology theme for a minute. This was only my 3rd book on the topic and it is interesting to combine the three together. This book was a unique perspective as the author was involved for many years, is father of current leader, and escaped from the compound he was living in on base. Interesting topic, crazy stories, and slightly quirky author.

eanderson There is one by David Miscavige‘s niece that is interesting. 5y
CRR @eanderson that‘s the one that I read first! I think I got a cheap kindle deal on it not knowing what it was about. I also bought “Bare-faced Messiah” but haven‘t read it yet. 5y

⭐️ I‘m having trouble understanding why this was even published. Perhaps Mr. Miscavige needed to supplement his Exer-Genie income? 🤷🏼‍♀️ This could‘ve been an intriguing article, but as a book, it was unbearably boring. There are plenty of other Scientology memoirs out there that are much better.

RadicalReader @britt_brooke lovely case for your ereader!! #cutecases #ereaders 6y

Ron Miscavige on his son David (leader of that for-profit business started by a science fiction writer 😉).

#cults #scientology #LRonHubbard

Reviewsbylola Totally agree. Tom Cruise and his weird antics totally sealed that for me. 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Tom Cruise is so effing weird. I can‘t even deal with him. I‘ve read that he and Miscavige are super close and that Cruise basically runs the show. Who knows if that‘s true, but it wouldn‘t surprise me. 6y
Stacy_31 Have you seen the documentary about Scientology called Going Clear? I don‘t usually knock other religious beliefs, but Scientology seems like such a scam. 6y

Cathythoughts The whole lot of it scares me .. a strange cult .. 6y
britt_brooke @Stacy_31 I haven‘t seen the documentary, but I‘ve read the book Going Clear. Very strange stuff. Seems like a total money-making scam to me. 6y
SleepyDragon I liked a couple posts about Leah Reminy on FB, and ads from Scientology attacking her started showing up in my feed. They were about what a horrible person she was, all personal attacks featuring quotes from family membees. First time I ever reported and blocked ads. So yeah, I'm thinking they are on the Dark Side of the Force. 6y
britt_brooke @NeesyBeth That is so crazy!! 6y

@britt_brooke Look what I'm reading, have you read it? My husband found it on the shelf at the library & brought it home for me. The person before made notes in the margins, almost seems like fact checking. Underlining passages and timeline math. If I see anything interesting, I'll take picks of the notes. I just wonder who did it! So interesting!

britt_brooke Ooh, I haven‘t read this one! Good on hubby for grabbing it for you. That‘s so interesting about the notes. Sounds like it could‘ve been a member or maybe former member? 7y
britt_brooke And thanks for tagging me! 7y
bio_chem06 @britt_brooke I'm not sure about being a member or not, it could've been a book club read maybe, who knows. I just thought it was not your typical book to make notes on, which made me think member too! I'm really liking it. Its a good one. 7y
britt_brooke @bio_chem06 I‘m definitely going to read it sometime. 👍🏻 7y

I don‘t really have anything for the #scientology prompt, other than that I have had this book on my TBR for a long while and I have watched several episodes of Leah Rimini‘s show. I find it incredibly disturbing to hear the stories of those who have left, especially the ones who have family still inside :( #noteworthynovember @Jess7

bio_chem06 Have you read her book, yet? 7y
bookwrm526 @bio_chem06 I haven‘t, but I plan to, I picked up the ebook on sale today 7y
bio_chem06 I highly recommend doing it on audio, but over all, I liked her book a lot 7y

I'm really interested in reading about Scientology for obvious reasons (i.e. it's totally bananas) but this was still not a great read. Ron Miscavage has a tendency to ramble and repeat himself and he doesn't seem to have a lot of good dirt. It's not terrible, but if you're going to read about Scientology, I'd go with the vastly superior "Going Clear" by Lawrence Wright.

This religion/cult is fascinating!! I'm a bit obsessed with stories of Scientology survivors.

LauraJ Have you watched Leah Remini's show on A&E? My neighborhood is swarming with Scientologists, so I'm kinda fascinated too. 8y
britt_brooke It is fascinating and bizarre and, frankly, kind of unbelievable. I've read a few books about it including Dianetics (totally b-a-n-a-n-a-s). 8y
Jen2 I love the show. Her book is good too!! 8y

OneCent76 I saw him on Leah's show. I feel so bad for him. Adding this to my tbr list! 8y
ohyeahthatgirl Have you read A Queer and Pleasant Danger by Kate Bornstein? They're a queer person who left the church to transition from male to female. 8y
Jen2 No I will have to read that!!! 8y

I read this book because I am interested in the influence of cults and the story of scientology apparently goes right through my hometown. It's more memoir than tell-all. The author still believes in the tenets of scientology even if he feels his son is perverting those tenets. A quick read. The author tends to ramble and repeat. But I did learn some things about scientology. It's a one-sided story but if you like the topic the book might appeal.

I have a morbid fascination with Scientology from a purely train-wreck perspective. Though the more I read the sadder I am about all the people who have been hurt by it. I'm sure this book will be no exception.

Dispatcher_12 You know how a dad sometimes takes a little longer than most people to tell a story? And there's a lot of reiterating and circling back? Now imagine that, only the story is unbelievably depressing. 8y

I loved Troublemaker by Leah Remini so I had to pick this one up-- further down the rabbit hole I go!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I also recommend Beyond Belief by his granddaughter Jenna Miscavage Hill. Looking forward to this one too. 8y
Matilda @BarbaraTheBibliophage thanks for the rec! 8y
Vblancsbooks 🕳 down you go! 😊 8y
Dispatcher_12 Funny.. I read all of the ones mentioned and I'm at this point too. Though I started with Going Clear. 8y

Cult religions are something that fascinate me, and I was immediately interested in this one. Unfortunately this didn't go into enough about scientology for me or its inner circle. For the father of the leader of scientology Ron Miscavage didn't seem to know that much.

Really interesting, but if you've read Going Clear or any other Scientology book, not much new information. If you want juicy Scientology gossip, I preferred Leah Remini's book Troublemaker.

Listening to this one. Really fascinating to get the story of a multigenerational Scientology family from the older generation.
