Kate, Who Tamed The Wind
Kate, Who Tamed The Wind | Liz Garton Scanlon
4 posts | 5 read
Award-winning author Liz Garton Scanlon presents a young, rhythmic read-aloud about a girl who solves a windy problem with an environmentally sound solution: planting trees. A wild wind blows on the tippy-top of a steep hill, turning everything upside down for the man who lives there. Luckily, Kate comes up with a plan to tame the wind. With an old wheelbarrow full of young trees, she journeys up the steep hill to add a little green to the man's life, and to protect the house from the howling wind. From award-winning author Liz Garton Scanlon and whimsical illustrator Lee White comes a delightfully simple, lyrical story about the important role trees play in our lives, and caring for the world in which we live. Praise for Bob, Not Bob by Liz Garton Scanlon: "This is read-aloud gold!" --Publishers Weekly, Starred Praise for All the World by Liz Garton Scanlon: "A sumptuous and openhearted poem . . . (that) expresses the philosophy early readers most need to hear: there's humanity everywhere." --The New York Times

This book is about a little girl who hears a man who lives on the hill and helps him solve the issue of it being very windy. This would be MF and would be good with S technique because of how it flows. This would be a good book to also tie in with a science lesson as it has to do with planting trees. UDL principle 1.1 with displaying information and EL 44.

Nrossi https://www.readbrightly.com/brightly-storytime-kate-who-tamed-the-wind/ this would be good for students to hear the book in a read aloud. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding 10 posts noted on time! Be sure to summarize the book a bit more and explain your resource a bit more as well. I like how you are explaining the universal design and English learner strategies however you must also include the verbiage along with the number or decimal. Be sure to do this on each post. 3y

Using repetitious words and cadences, Scanlon writes a simple, telling tale of the importance of intuition and ingenuity to solve problems. This is also an environmental story, with a small more older explanation at the end of the story. The illustrations are rustic, but so perfect for this story. The wind blew so hard at a house the owner had no idea what to do. But, Kate figured out what to do...

There‘s a man that lives in a house on the very top of a steep hill. The house has many problems because it is always caught in the middle of a constant current of strong wind. The man cries out without an idea of how to solve his problems, and a young girl Kate hears his call. She comes up with an idea of how to protect his house from the wind. Read the story to find out how she tamed the wind while also helping the environment. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would work great as a book to use in a storytelling technique. The pages are simple and lyrical, and flow really nicely. Other teaching techniques that could be used with this book are RA, CR, GR, and IR. I found this online resource that has a section about the book, the author, and activities that can be utilized with the story. http://lizgartonscanlon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Garton-Scanlon-Liz.-KATE-... 6y
sboynt The UDL 3.2 guideline highlighting patterns, critical features, and relationships would be very useful with this text. ESOL 44 of focusing on thinking skills would relate well with the UDL and the book. 6y
Jeffersleighann You caught me with the word environment! I love when children‘s books make students aware of the environment or think of environmentally safe ways to solve problems. 6y
