Tough Mothers: Amazing Stories of Historys Mightiest Matriarchs | Jason Porath
7 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
The author of Rejected Princesses returns with an inspiring, fully illustrated guide that brings together the fiercest mothers in historyreal life matriarchs who gave everything to protect all they loved. Mothers possess the "maternal instinct"an innate fierceness that drives them to nurture, safeguard, fight, and sacrifice for the most important things that matter to them. For some mothers, its their children. For others, its artistic expression, invention, social cause, or even a nation that they helped to birth. In Tough Mothers, Jason Porath brings his wisdom and wit to bear on fifty fascinating matriarchs. In concise, deeply researched vignettes, accompanied by charming illustrations, Porath illuminates these fearsome women, explores their lives, and pays tribute to their accomplishments. Here are famous women as well as lesser known figures from around the globe who have left their indelible mark as they changed the course of history, including: The Mother Who Sued to Save Her Children from SlaverySojourner Truth The Mother of Rock n RollSister Rosetta Tharpe The Mother of Holocaust ChildrenIrena Sendler The Mothers of The Dominican RepublicThe Mirabal Sisters The Mother of Yemens Golden AgeArwa al-Sulayhi A celebration of motherhood and female achievement, Tough Mothers reminds us of the power of women to transform our lives and our world.

This book was fantastic! It covers women from all over the world who did amazing things throughout history. Some were champions for civil rights, some were explorers or warriors, some were infamous for their conniving ways, and all are inspirational. The book is separated by maturity level, so my little one and I had some fun reading the “PG” section together, while I read all the way to the end on my own. An excellent book, I highly recommend it.

I didn't like this quite as much as Rejected Princesses, but it is worth reading to learn about lots of tough ladies.

Olympias of Macedon (375-316 BCE, Greece); "The Mom Who Made Alexander Great".

Yeah. THAT Alexander. Olympias was his mom. The reason why he was as great as he was is because she fought tooth and nail to solidify his place as heir to the throne, dealt with international diplomacy & domestic policy while he ruled, and fought to the death (literally) to maintain her family's claim to the throne after his death. Alex wouldn't be The Great w/o her.

Molly Craig (1917-2004, Australia); "The Mother Who Walked Across Australia--Twice". Back in 1930s AU, the govt decided to kidnap all mixed-race Aboriginal children, raise them in "reeducation camps" aka prison camps, and train them as domestic servants. Molly Craig, a mixed race Aboriginal girl, was kidnapped, but she escaped. Which never happened. It was huge news. She got back to her fam, years later got kidnapped AGAIN, and escaped AGAIN! ⬇️

queerbookreader The second escape she ran with her child (she had to leave one behind), and after she was finally apprehended for escaping from the concentration camp the second time, she had her second child stolen from her by the govt. She wouldn't see her kids again for over 20 years. 7y
queerbookreader (Australia kept up stealing aboriginal children until the 70s. The country wouldn't apologize for the mass kidnapping, forced assimilation, and legalized enslavement of Aboriginal children until 2008.) 7y

The #impulsebuy part of today‘s #bookhaul. I should not be allowed to roam through a bookstore unsupervised. 😂

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage The Wolf looks good! Is it a standalone? (edited) 7y
DGRachel @BookHoarder32 It looks like it‘s part of a series (first book). I don‘t know how many are planned, as there are no others listed on Goodreads. It just says Book #1. 7y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @DGRachel Awesome, thanks 😊 7y
DGRachel @BookHoarder32 You‘re welcome. I couldn‘t resist the cover! I have no idea what the ratings are or anything. It was truly an impulse buy based on nothing more than the cover and the blurb. 😳 7y
JazzFeathers That's the best way to go around a bookstore 😆 7y

Had the pleasure of seeing @jasonporath and I was honored to receive an advance copy of his newest book, Tough Mothers. The love and care put into this is evident on each and every page. It's as beautiful as it is informational.
