A Place for Pluto
A Place for Pluto | Stef Wade
9 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
Pluto got the shock of his life when he was kicked out of the famous nine. His planet status was stripped away, leaving him lost and confused. Poor Pluto! On his quest to find a place where he belongs, he talks to comets, asteroids, and meteoroids. He doesn't fit it anywhere! But when Pluto is about to give up, he runs into a dwarf planet and finally finds his place in the solar system. This feel-good picture book combines a popular science topic with character education themes of self discovery, acceptance, and friendship. It has bonus material in the back matter to support curriculum.

Christmas #bookhaul! The Pluto books were picked for me by my seven year old because she knows I was devastated when Pluto was kicked off the planet roster. #Clanlands was a present to myself that my husband got to wrap and put under the tree for me 😂

So adorable I can‘t even handle it. Pluto gets kicked out of being a planet, and he is now on a search for his place in the universe. The art is tipping toward being ALMOST too cutesy, but it maintains its tentative balance and stays simply too cute for words. The explanation for Pluto‘s demotion at the end is funny and awesome.

But Pluto will always be a planet to me, even if it is only half the size of the United States.

kgriffith You're killing me with the kids' books today! I may need to get this before camp :) 6y

A Place for Pluto written by Stef Wade and illustrated by Melanie Demmer is a great book to use in a science class! This SF book is about Pluto getting demoted. He didn‘t belong to the group of planets anymore so where did he belong?! Eventually he finds his place with the dwarf planets! The dwarf planets are to small to be planets but to big to be rocks. They weren‘t planets, comets, asteroids, or meteoroids. They were just like Pluto!

giont “Is Pluto a Planet?” A great lesson plan to do after reading this story. Students will be able to do hands on activities to determine whether Pluto is a planet or not. Check it out here: http://sciencenetlinks.com/lessons/pluto-planet/ UDL principles that fit the book & lesson are: 3.1 (activists or supply background knowledge) 3.2 (highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) & 4.1 (vary the methods for response 6y
giont and navigation). Along with ESOL strategies 4 (link lesson topic to students prior knowledge) 13 (use preview/review activities) 36 (ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses) and 46 (use discovery learning activities). I would use this story as a RA in a science class, it can start the conversation of Pluto and if it should be a planet or not! #LAE3414sp19 (edited) 6y
taywise393 Wow I‘ve never heard of this book! I‘ll definitely add this to my list. It seems like a great book to read in a science lesson. You can tie it in with a lesson about space! Thanks for sharing. :) 6y
Mmw2478 I read this a few days ago and loved it. So cute how Pluto was explained. 6y
DrSpalding Another student read a similar story. This is obviously a great book to read along with a science unit. There are a few books like this out there since Pluto was removed from the solar system. Having several of them to accompany a solar system unit would be fantastic. 6y

I enjoyed reading this cute SF book that explains in a humorous way what happened to Pluto. Pluto is sad when he learns he is no longer considered a planet. Where does he fit in? Instead of giving up, he sets out on a journey to find his true place in the solar system. Great for a RA or SR. #lae3414sp19. UDL 2.1, 2.4, 3.1 and ESOL 4 and 14 could be used for this book.

alexandracarpenter The premise of this book seems so cute! Next time I go to the bookstore I will have to keep an eye out for it. 6y
hkeiger Wow! This looks so cute. I had a hard time finding a PB that I really liked that was SF! I would love to check this one at. Is it at the CMC? 6y

DrSpalding There were so many books written after Pluto was ousted from the solar system. Great book for a science lesson 6y

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a great way to explain Pluto. This picture book takes a rhyming look at why Pluto isn‘t a planet anymore. And it seeks to help him find his place in the solar system. Very well done, easy to understand, and a generally pleasing story.
