The Benson Murder Case is the first book in the best-selling Philo Vance series of mystery novels written by S.S. Van Dine. When a local man mysteriously dies, New York dilettante Philo Vance steps in to assist the authorities in their investigations after concluding that they are ill-equipped and lacking in the acumen necessary to solve such a complicated case. After reconstructing the murder in such a was as to prove that the culprit must be five feet, ten and a half inches in height, Vance works together with his friend District Attorney Markham to investigate the victim's business associates and romantic interests until the mystery is finally pieced together. A thrilling book sure to appeal to lovers of mystery and crime fiction, The Benson Murder Case is well worth a read and not to be missed by fans of Van Dine's seminal work. S. S. Van Dine is the pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright (1888 1939), who was an American art critic and detective novelist. Philo Vance is a fictional character featured in 12 crime novels written by S. S. Van Dine, published in the 1920s and 1930s. Vance was immensely popular in books, movies, and on the radio. He was portrayed as a stylish, even foppish dandy; a New York bon vivant possessing a highly intellectual bent.

If anyone is making a list of mystery series with detectives so insufferable that you hope the murderer gets away with it, then let me recommend S.S. Van Dine's Philo Vance. I usually like this sort of cozy puzzle (with floorplans!) but the annoying detective, the clueless cops, and the victim-who-had-it-coming had me rooting for the killer.

revenge4porgy One of my favorite cozy series is the one by Parnell Hall (of course I forgot the name of the series), lol! The other cozy writer that might interest you is Miranda James. She writes a series based on a Southern Librarian who brings a cat to work with him, turns into an amateur detective. 6y
