Unmasked by the Marquess
Unmasked by the Marquess: The Regency Impostors | Cat Sebastian
27 posts | 26 read | 14 to read
The one you love Robert Selby is determined to see his sister make an advantageous match. But he has two problems: the Selbys have no connections or money and Robert is really a housemaid named Charity Church. Shes enjoyed every minute of her masquerade over the past six years, but she knows her pretense is nearing an end. Charity needs to see her beloved friend married well and then Robert Selby will disappearforever. May not be who you think Alistair, Marquess of Pembroke, has spent years repairing the estate ruined by his wastrel father, and nothing is more important than protecting his fortune and name. He shouldnt be so beguiled by the charming young man who shows up on his doorstep asking for favors. And he certainly shouldnt be thinking of all the disreputable things hed like to do to the impertinent scamp. But is who you need When Charitys true nature is revealed, Alistair knows he cant marry a scandalous woman in breeches, and Charity isnt about to lace herself into a corset and play a respectable miss. Can these stubborn souls learn to sacrifice what theyve always wanted for a love that is more than they could have imagined?

I loved this! I loved the queer characters, and how unique the story is. I think the Bridgertons would have been allies with Alistair and Robin. 😊 I 100% recommend!

Adorable! A satisfying historical with non-binary and bisexual love interests. I'll def be reading more of Cat Sebastian's books.

Cat Sebastian writes some of the most interesting and unique historical romances in print today. This novel, the first in a trilogy, tells the story of a Regency era Marquess who falls in love with a genderqueer/gender nonconforming heroine. There are issues of gender identity, inheritance, class divides, and scandal throughout the story. (The author also includes a brief timeline of real life genderqueer people in British history.)

I could hardly put this down. There aren‘t many historical romances with modern twists. The couple is non-binary, but this is still a m/f romance. I think this book appeals to me because they love one another as people, irrespective of background, class, gender, etc.

This was so amazing I read it in a day. 😍 So many good things, only one/two bad things. Open bisexuality, positive gender queer rep, amazing world building, flawless smashing of traditional setups and regency plots. Ten stars, would recommend to anyone. I'll comment my minimal issues to mark spoilers.

Shout out to @Owlizabeth and @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian for putting this in their spotlights ♥️

theresidentromantic The side characters were hugely lacking, Louisa is very hot and cold and you'd think they'd be closer, but they barely speak, there's potential for a few other characters too but they play absolutely minimal roles, which is just a missed opportunity but noticed when series like this play on you loving a character enough to go buy their book. 5y
theresidentromantic And I kind of hated the solution. I get that it was really one of the only available ones, but if that was what it was going to come to anyway, they should've come up with it a lot sooner than they did. Also, there's absolutely no way there was no blowback from Cambridge. Not to mention 4 years in the same locker rooms? Playing rugby and shit? I feel like they didn't address this nearly enough, though the authors note is fun history. 5y
theresidentromantic I know those two spoiler complaints sound a little harsh, but only because they really stop this book from being like the book of the year for me. They hold this book back from being a mold busting rockstar. But it's 100% worth your time. 5y

This was refreshingly similar to cishet Regency romances, but with a bisexual male character and a non-binary cross dressing character! I really liked the dynamic between the leads (stiff, aristocratic Alistair who doesn't know how to love and easygoing playful loyal Robin). Sebastian succeeded in writing their relationship in a way that didn't conform to hetero dynamics despite the fact it's about a cis man and an AFAB person. Great bi rep!

O. M. G. This book. I‘m going to read everything Cat Sebastian has written. This is a Regency romance between a bisexual man and GNC/NB person and it was AWESOME! It spoke to so many queer issues and feelings and made it sexy as hell. Lots of non-traditional characters and situations, it still felt like a typical Regency romance in all the best ways. Highly recommend!! #romantsy #queerbooks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Owlizabeth And shoutout to @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian for putting this on my radar. 6y
theresidentromantic Omg yes. I love regency, but I often don't read them because straight laced 18 year old virgins are exhausting. I'm excited for this. 6y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Owlizabeth Woo hoo! So glad you liked it. I'm actually not done my copy yet! I have no idea how they are going to be together!! 6y

"There were men who preferred other men, and kept damned quiet about it, and there were men who preferred women. To not take a stand one way or another seemed wanton. Greedy. Not at all like the sober, measured gentleman Alistair wanted to be." Oof, internalized biphobia in the Regency period. That feels almost too real. #Romantsy #BisexualBooks #QueerBooks

Littens I am not doing very well on my project to read the books I already own, but it's so hard when you work at a library! And also I recently moved and my books are still in boxes. But anyway, I checked out these #romance books yesterday at work. I have heard very good things about both! Plus, the Cat Sebastian has a bi and a non-binary character! #Romantsy #QueerBooks #BisexualBooks

Not my favourite cat Sebastian but still pretty blooming good. My reservations were mostly around the fact that I didn‘t see a satisfactory path to a happily ever after that didn‘t compromise one or other of the couple and I‘m still not sold on how it unravelled, but the rest of it was great.

It pains me to rate a Cat Sebastian novel So-So, but I'm afraid this romance missed the mark for me. It takes Alistair the better part of 280 pages to accept that Charity is nonbinary, not a deceptive woman in breeches, and I can't invest myself in a couple when one so completely disregards the other's identity. I cared way more about Gilbert and Louisa, farming dorks extraordinaire, and the Allenbys.

I'd been on tenterhooks waiting for this one: bisexual cisgender male and a nonbinary romantic interest. It did not disappoint! The HEA worked for me without the love interest sacrificing their identity and the conflicts were realistic and normal. The sex was hot. I read this beaut in 3ish hours, I couldn't stop!

Still couldn't sleep, so I did finish this book and it's so good. So good! You got: kinda con men, very proper dudes embarrassing themselves to death, echoing gothic novels, oh, and a nonbinary lead and a bi lead. And I laughed a lot. Just delightful.

I was hit by the Sunday Night Sads and have warded them off with super charming book. I'd finish it right now, but midnight is probably the latest sleeptime acceptable to the Monday version of me?

Ok #sorrynotsorry I am obsessed with all things Romance and Romance podcasts are amazing. Faves so far are Whoa!mance and Wicked Wallflowers. Drunk Austen also fun, with less sex. Any other faves? Also #rombklove hashtag is going to make me hit my checkout limit at the library. 📚📚📚

I love this book. Grumpy bisexual hero, lively, witty non-binary hero(ine), and the most suspenseful trip to the happy ever after I've ever read.

Diving in. Excited for the story. Vaguely uncomfortable with the cover. It‘s just a little too soft and feathered (separate from resolution issues in this pic) and idk about those faces. They‘re like creepy smooth. #romance #romantsy

Johanna414 He looks like a Ken doll 😳 7y
mdemanatee @Johanna414 Yeah. I hope these weren‘t some poor models they filtered to death. Cause man. 7y
balletbookworm Wait till you see the terrible photoshop job on the next Sedgewicks book. It‘s like a student project 😬 We need to get up a petition for Avon to actually start spending better money on Cat‘s covers. 7y
mdemanatee @balletbookworm uh oh. Whhhyyyy. I will def be mentioning it in my pub notes. Not fair to the series. Not fair to the weight the imprint is probably giving the sales. 7y
balletbookworm @mdemanatee yep, the cover quality is mentioned in my review for sure. The Sedgewick cover is up on goodreads (A Gentleman Never Keeps Score) 7y

Smart nonbinary/genderfluid person + bisexual stuffy marquess + Regency + secrets + hijinks = Cat Sebastian upping her game. Loved it so much. Y‘all will want to read this immediately on 4/17.

(Richard Armitage is now Pembroke, I accept this headcanon)

Tho, a petition is needed to have Avon get Cat better covers. The general design is fine but they need to look less like student Photoshop projects. (Pembroke appears to be missing a thumb)
