Looking for Mr. Goodbar
Looking for Mr. Goodbar | Judith Rossner
Based on a harrowing true story, the groundbreaking #1 New York Times bestseller, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, is a story of love, power, sex, and death during the sexual revolution of the 1970s. Theresa Dunn spends her days as a schoolteacher whose rigid Catholic upbringing has taught her to find happiness by finding the right man. But at night, her resentment of those social mores and fear of attachment lead her into the alcohol-and-drug fueled underworld of singles' bars, where she engages in a pattern of dangerous sexual activity that threatens her safety and, ultimately, her life. Looking for Mr. Goodbar is uncommonly well-written and well-constructed fiction, easily accessible, but full of insight and intelligence and illumination (The New York Times Book Review). With more than four million copies in print, this seminal novela lightning rod for controversy upon its publicationhas become a cultural touchstone that has forever influenced our perception of social rebellion and sexual empowerment.

The cover doesnt reflect a dramatic story based on a true crime. We know at the opening that a woman has been killed but then the bk tells the story of Theresa Dunn, her life as sister, dtr, teacher, in 60's NY who lives a life where she enjoys sexual encounters in the city's bars. The bk gives voice to the victim, a tough read but compelling. I've not seen the film but plan to do so if I can find it. A remarkable bk that feels ahead of its time.

Ruthiella I read this 30 years ago. Good to know it holds up. 2y
Leftcoastzen The film is good to . It‘s been awhile but I remember feeling both were ahead of their time . If you Google the original first edition, it definitely seems more accurate but of course has a certain 70s look. 2y
andrew61 @Ruthiella Yes it did not feel dated at all. 2y

andrew61 @Leftcoastzen thanks, definitely want to watch it now, googling the cast I have always liked Diane Keaton but also what must be a young Richard Gere. 2y

Flashback 1975. An intense, albeit sad read. Page turner and inspired by a true story.

LynsLibrary It was based on the murder of Roseann Quinn 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks Yeah, I read about the case after I finished the book. Sad. 7y
