The Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth | Jane Hamilton
"An American beauty this book . . . The narrator of Jane Hamilton's sensational first novel is a holy lusty innocent." VOGUE "Ms. Hamilton gives Ruth a humble dignity and allows her hope but it's not a heavenly hope. It's a common one, caked with mud and held with gritted teeth. And it's probably the only kind that's worth reading about." NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW "Hamilton's story builds to a shocking crescendo. Her small-town characters are as appealingly offbeat and brushed with grace as any found in Alice Hoffman's or Anne Tyler's novels." GLAMOUR "Jane Hamilton's novel is authentically Dickensian . . . The real achievement of this first novel is not so much the blackness as the suggestion of resilience. At the end, Ruth begins to put together her shattered body, spirit and life. Her words are awkward, as they have been all along, but suddenly and unexpectedly they shine. LOS ANGELES TIMES

This was a sad and horrifying book. I did expect part of what happened at the end. Jane Hamilton is a skilled writer who managed to give me mixed feelings about all characters.
This was my #Doublespin for December.

Yay! I'm finally done with it!!
This is not a happy book. It tells a very real story however. I think that is exactly how every single book listed in Oprah's Book Club is.
Characteristics of any book even considered to be part of Oprah's list:
1.The writing must be beautiful.
2. The story must be tragic.

(Bonus points will be given if it makes you cry.)

merelybookish Read this eons ago! Maybe back when Oprah picked it. I don't remember a thing about it though 4y
eeclayton I wish we could see how many Littens put together that 0%. It can totally be only one person's opinion! 4y

ItsAnotherJen 50 pages in and I have to say the writing is beautiful! The story is not a happy one. Maybe that's the issue here 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @eeclayton I was curious, too! It's 1 so-so rating from three years ago and one random post reading the book. 4y
ItsAnotherJen @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @eeclayton On Goodreads it has a 3.85 rating with almost 65,000 people weighing in. I would say that is much more accurate! 4y
Graywacke That Litsy rating is really entertaining. 🙂 4y

Deeply disturbing book about a dysfunctional family. The one complaint I have about this book is that it was too long.

PenguinInFlight I DNF this one...it got way too disturbing and was difficult to read, especially since it is so long. My heart couldn‘t take it. 6y
Jennick2004 Ok someone help me I‘ve been a litten for a long time and haven‘t figured out what DNF means 🤣😝 6y
Mcoun @Jennick2004 , it means “did not finish”. 6y
Jennick2004 OMG lol 🤣 ty 6y
Haweller I think this was an Oprah book and in my opinion holds true to the type of books she picks. Depressing and heart wrenching. 6y
