Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart
Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart | Alice Walker
Alice Walker, author of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning The Color Purplean American novel of permanent importance (San Francisco Chronicle)crafts a bilingual collection that is both playfully imaginative and intensely moving. Presented in both English and Spanish, Alice Walker shares a timely collection of nearly seventy works of passionate and powerful poetry that bears witness to our troubled times, while also chronicling a life well-lived. From poems of painful self-inquiry, to celebrating the simple beauty of baking frittatas, Walker offers us a window into her magical, at times difficult, and liberating world of activism, love, hope and, above all, gratitude. Whether shes urging us to preserve an urban paradise or behold the delicate necessity of beauty to the spirit, Walker encourages us to honor the divine that lives inside all of us and brings her legendary free verse to the page once again, demonstrating that she remains a revolutionary poet and an inspiration to generations of fans.

A collection of excellent poetry exploring a wide range of topics, especially issues of equality and racism. I liked the strong imagery Walker uses throughout this collection. There were several moments where a buildup or a sudden reveal really struck me.

This is one of my #Roll100 picks for February.

I definitely recommend letting Alice Walker read poetry to you. That said, this is pretty heavy and political. Which is definitely good. But maybe not what I was expecting.

This collection was mostly written between 2015-2016 during what Walker called a time of great sadness, loss, and despair. These poems reference people like Coretta Scott King, Muhammad Ali, Frida Kahlo, and Thich Nhat Hanh, with diverse topics such as suffering, political parties, Hamas, war, grief, blessings, war, and hope. There are both English and Spanish versions of each poem.

What can I say? This was not my favorite Alice Walker. I gave it 2 stars but I can‘t give Alice Walker a pan so I rated this so-so on Litsy. Does anybody else have a difficult time rating a favorite author low on a particular book?

Just finished “Meet Me at the Museum” and need some time to process. Taking a #poetry break by starting this. Alice Walker never disappoints.

A combination of directness and beautiful poetic device, this collection is fresh and relevant, balanced with wisdom and experience. Everyone should read this collection.

"Hope is a woman who has lost her fear.
Along with her home, her employment, her parents,
her olive trees, her grapes. The peace of independence;
the reassuring noises of ordinary neighbors.

Hope rises, She always does,
did we fail to notice this in all the stories
they've tried to suppress?"

another part of the same poem below:

Caterina "and all she has to fight with is the reality of what was done to her;
to her country; her people; her children;
her home.
All she has as armor is what she has learned
must never be done.
Not in the name of War
and especially never in the
name of Peace."

"What is the dream, Aloisea?
Let us make it clear again,
as the world reawakens
to possibilities
until now
barely thought:
Is it the peaceful nation
in which every child is wanted
and adored;
where every woman
has a voice?
Where every man's dignity
is rooted in nonviolence?"
