Meridian | Alice Walker

Pickpick

Meridian is a young, black woman who joins the civil rights movement of the 1960‘s in the American South. Walker captures racism, sexism, illness, suffering and poverty in this heartbreaking, beautifully written novel. I thought this was really powerful and historically important.

Mehso-so

These collection of stories are about Black womanhood, touching on various topics like sexuality, lust, abortion, porn, rape, race, and many others. They‘re insightful however I‘m somewhat disappointed. A handful of them stood out for me - Nineteen Fifty-Five, The Lover, The Abortion, and Laurel; the others weren‘t so impressive.

This was more scandalous and salacious than I was expecting. I was curious to read about Rebecca Walker‘s upbringing as a child of mixed race and cultures but what I read was a story of neglectful parenting, numerous sexual escapades and unrecognized privilege. It was a compelling read but I would have like to learn more about her navigating chilhood. Now I‘m very eager to read Alice Walker‘s memoir. I wonder how she‘ll cover these same years.

thereadingpal Oh I'm very curious about this book now, I gotta be honest. It seems like a really compelling read 3y
Graywacke I wouldn‘t have thought about this book and now I‘m fascinated after your posts. Do you have any reservations reading Alice Walker? (I would have to overcome mine.) 3y
Cinfhen I read The Color Purple and was really impressed with Walker‘s storytelling and compassion so to read her daughter‘s memoir and gain a totally different perspective about her as a parent, caretaker, responsible adult was SHOCKING @Graywacke @thereadingpal this book was written in the early 2000‘s so I wonder if Rebecca Walker has ever retracted any of her claims 3y

thereadingpal @Cinfhen I'd have to read The Color Purple then this, to make a comparison, I think 🤔 it must really be shocking! 3y
Graywacke @Cinfhen Wikipedia says mother and daughter were estranged and later reconciled - with 2019 citations on their reconciliation. She must have had quite a childhood. 3y
Cinfhen I‘m not surprised by the estrangement nor the reconciliation- that‘s how life goes. Apparently Rebecca Walker penned additional books @Graywacke and it seems she‘s sort of stepped away from anything to do with her father. 3y

This one was winking at me yesterday. It‘s pretty interesting. Rebecca Walker is the daughter of Alice Walker, who was married to a Jewish man in the late 1960‘s. Im curious to read Alice Walker‘s new memoir after this.

thereadingpal Seems really interesting! Can't wait to hear your thoughts 3y
Cinfhen Will definitely keep you updated @thereadingpal 3y
TheBookHippie Oooo. Can‘t wait for your review! 3y
Graywacke Whoa 3y
Cinfhen Right @TheBookHippie @Graywacke it‘s turning out to be quite the memoir 3y

#MayMoms - Groovy: I couldn‘t wait to get to today‘s prompt because ‘groovy‘ is a captivating, super dope word. It drips the vibe of sunshine, frenetic energy and hip/trendy intensity. There was a giddiness in finding (the) someone or some book to fit the description. Actually I had someone in mind the entire time. Author…Alice Walker.👇🏽

Nute She delivers grooviness with a pervasive look and style of those times and these times too. But more than diggin‘ afros, head scarves, psychedelic prints and platform shoes; she (re)presents with a strong awareness of self, potency, depth, color saturation, and an unwavering voice of fair treatment for women and all ordinary folk.
She vibes groovy on all levels 💯

Nute @Eggs I like the use of the word “authentic” when reflecting upon Alice Walker.🙂 3y
Nute @Dragon I agree!🙂 3y
Nute @TrishB Thank you, Trish! Your words are always kind!💕 3y
Nute @kspenmoll Thank you, Katherine! Alice Walker came to mind immediately after reading the print. Awhile ago, I had come across a very cool photo of her wearing a bright colorful head scarf and large dangling earrings with a ‘so what‘ expression on her face, but I couldn‘t find it again on the Internet. This photo works well.💕 (edited) 3y
Nute @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks, Misty! I am enjoying the prompts for Hashtag MayMoms.💕 3y
