A powerful play about an African American family living together in a small apartment in Chicago. It‘s about family dynamics and how each generation has different ideas about how to achieve their dreams and be more successful than their ancestors. It‘s also about the racism and poverty that creates obstacles and oppression for reaching those dreams. #readingwomenchallenge #femaleplaywright

BeaG This is one of my favorites. I love the play and the movie too. 1w

I struggle to read non-fiction. I‘ve always thought I might enjoy this book, but kept avoiding it anyway because not fiction. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks to #readingwomenchallenge for the ‘featuring a woman in science‘ prompt... I LOVED this book!

The science was fascinating (I love the way she talks about trees!) and Hope Jahren‘s stories of her life were even more so. Such a smart, accomplished woman with an honest and compelling story.

cont‘d ⬇️

sprainedbrain I really enjoyed her sense of humor, her relationship with Bill, her motherhood anecdotes, and all of the literary references.

I listened to the audiobook: I do love a memoir read by the author, and this was no exception, but wow... it seemed even slower paced than most books. I had to speed it up to 2x (1.75 is my normal speed these days). 😬

sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme that part brought tears to my eyes! We are past planting season for this year, but I‘m planning to help some of my giant maple‘s babies survive next year! (edited) 1w

I read this for the #IndigenousAuthor prompt of the #ReadingWomenChallenge. Maggie is a monster slayer and must grapple with her clan powers and their consequences as well as the loss she has faced in her life. Her world has a dystopian setting after a big flood. There is a lot of action mixed with fantasy and Navajo stories. This is the first book in the series.

I'm usually bored by world war books (there are too many!) but oh my gosh, this book made me cry. Haunting, romantic, and heartbreaking, with a fascinating frame of Greek mythology (!!!!), plus the prettiest cover of the year. #pop19 #bookinspiredbymythologylegendorfolklore #readingwomenchallenge #mythretelling @thereadingwomen

Prodigal Summer | Barbara Kingsolver

I read this for the #ReadingWomenChallenge prompt for a book set in Appalachia. Prodigal Summer takes place over the course of a summer as three narrators face changes in their lives. Deanna lives alone in the woods and relates more to nature than people. Lusa is navigating a new marriage and family in the country. Garnett is a widowed old coot who dislikes his organic grower neighbor. Nature in Appalachia is another character in the book.

I think this would be incredible on stage. Some of the stories were really powerful. But I struggled with reading the “script”. #readingwomenchallenge #play

For me, curiosity-driven science is a very interesting researching field, especially in the connection with nature. How fascinating is the fact that the trees have memory, that they can decide things⁉️ This heartwarming story is presentation of a complicated life of a scientist, from personal to professional struggles/sacrifices, and this story is also beautiful, simple ode to the nature, friendship and patience.

This book filled #translatedbookpublishedbefore1945 for #readingwomenchallenge and #publicdomain for #booked2019. My daughter loved the Netflix series based on this book a few years ago but I‘d never read the whole story. Absolutely charming characters and a sweet, happy story about the power of kindness and forgiveness. Loved it.
