The Minimalist Home
The Minimalist Home: A Room-by-Room Guide to a Decluttered, Refocused Life | Joshua Becker
A popular minimalist blogger and author of The More of Less shows you how to methodically turn your home into a place of peace, contentment, and purposeful living. One of today's most influential minimalist advocates takes us on a decluttering tour of our own houses and apartments, showing us how to decide what to get rid of and what to keep. He both offers practical guidelines for simplifying our lifestyle at home and addresses underlying issues that contribute to over-accumulation in the first place. The purpose is not just to create a more inviting living space. It's also to turn our life's HQ--our home--into a launching pad for a more fulfilling and productive life in the world.

1. The clothes, toys, beds/blankets and other items from my pets who have passed away
2. Electronics. If they work, I don't get rid of them just so I can buy the newest technology
3. Clothes. I will wear them until they start to get holey or ratty tatty. I also don't get rid of clothes just so I can be the newest trends

@dabbe

TheBookHippie I agree with 2 & 3 !! 3mo
AmyG I tend to do #3, too. 3mo
dabbe Agree on all 3; you and I are quite alike! 💜🩶💜 3mo

I‘m learning to make more space in my life for what I love most: family and reading! Excited to join Litsy and meet some like minded readers! #minimalisthome #maximalistreader My new journaling practice has helped me hone in on favorites like books about books, women‘s struggles, hopeful books, strong characters and average pacing! #newmember #joyousjanuary

I've clocked about 10 hours in the #20in4 readathon and finished 2 audiobooks. I spent much of this weekend cleaning my house and actively utilizing some of Joshua Becker's tips on minimalizing my home. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Great time 👏👏👏🙌 3y

I really enjoyed this book, yes it is very detailed, some reviewers say it is too detailed but I quite like how detailed it is as a beginner to the whole minimalist lifestyle. This book has helped get me excited to start decluttering my home and given me ways to look at my current belongings with a more minimalist mindset. It has already inspired me to donate 100 books put of my book collection to a school fundraiser!

I finished this AND I‘m off to donate a trunk full of stuff! I like that he doesn‘t feel you should live with just 1 plate per person. He gives inspiration to go room by room and suggests things you should keep and things that are just cluttering your life. Next weekend I‘m tackling the bathrooms. It‘s amazing how much crap gets shoved in the cabinets under the sink and I‘m sure my daughter doesn‘t need all 70 colors of nail polish she owns 😂

umbrellagirl I need this in my life. 4y

Hmm. This one leans towards a pan. While it did have some good tips, there are lots of better books out there about minimalizing your home, including Becker‘s first book, The More of Less. This one was repetitive and pretty condescending.

I liked this much more than Becker‘s first book. Not as preachy. I also like that it focuses on minimalism that is practical and makes life better, not just having less stuff to have less stuff. “A home that is filled with only the things that you use and love will be a home that you love to use.”

wanderinglynn There‘s also a tradition in some cultures that if someone compliment something in your home, say a vase, that you give it to them. This is not only to promote hospitality, but it would also make you not get attached to things. This tradition may stem from the archaic meaning of compliment—it used to mean “gift.” 5y
wanderinglynn I‘ve been trying to take a more minimalist approach in my home. I purged a lot in December/January and I will say that I did feel lighter, less burdened. 5y

Honestly, I could give or take this book. It was a helpful guide for minimalizing room by room, but it got a little repetitive for me.

Quick read how to purge your home room by room. Good tips and motivation to reduce the material possessions you own and a strong argument for the quality of life that will result when this is done. Unfortunately, the book doesn‘t do it for you😜.

Does this align with my purposes? Is it so useful that I have to keep it, so beautiful that I can‘t live without it, or so personally meaningful it has to stay with me? #minimalism

I don‘t ever post about non-fiction reads on here but I‘m particularly excited about this one 🤗 Pre-ordered and it showed up the same day we got back from vacation. ❤️

RinaBrahmbhattBarot It's a great book! I've read it :) 5y
Amiable You should post more about your favorite nonfiction reads! I'm a nonfiction fan and I love to hear about new reads. 🙂 5y

I requested this book from NetGalley in the hopes that it would motivate me to finally do something about all this stuff. While some of the book and the minimalist movement is not for me, some of it was incredibly helpful and motivating. Full review here http://tinyurl.com/ybfv54wh #73of2018

"A home that is filled with only the things you use and love will be a home that you love to use"

Stacy_31 We tried the minimalist thing for a while. I love the idea behind it but have found that keeping up with it is so much work. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Tamra Moving helps, a lot! We‘ve been in our house 16 years and added two children. Now that we‘re leaving it, culling was much needed - general rule of thumb was if it hadn‘t been used in a year it‘s out. There are notable exceptions of course, books for instance. 😉😆 6y
Chellebearss @Stacy_31 I just needed the initial motivation to dispose of stuff we haven‘t used in years. I think we will still have too much stuff but it‘s still better than where we were 6y

Chellebearss @Tamra I wish we had of done that before we moved to this house 3 years ago but I had a new baby and no energy. It‘s getting done now though :) 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled My big thing lately was taking all our DVDs and putting them in album sleeves and throwing out the cases. Freed up so much space!! 6y
SleepyDragon My problem with minimalism is that it doesn't allow for storage of things you know you will need again and/or in the future. I saved so much money holding onto most of the baby stuff and clothes from my first born, even though there's an 8 year gap in age. My friend gives me her daughter's outgrown clothes, though my daughter will not wear them for another year, etc. 6y
Chellebearss @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled that‘s a good idea! 6y
Chellebearss @NeesyBeth yes I agree that saving money by storing things would be better than the minimalism ideas. I‘m finished having babies so as my girls outgrown things I‘m getting rid of them and not storing. If I wanted more I‘d for sure store stuff. Baby items are just too expensive not to do that! 😃 (edited) 6y

“ A home that is filled with only the things you use and love will be a home that you love to use.” 🏡 I‘m reading #TheMinimalistHome and I really liked this quote. Trying to reduce the crap in our house! #EpicGarageSale

JoScho Stacking! I need to do the same 6y
DHill Doing the same here. It feels great to get rid of things we no longer use or need. 6y
