NOW A MAJOR FILM, LEAVE NO TRACE, DIRECTED BY DEBRA GRANIK AND STARRING BEN FOSTER AND THOMASIN HARCOURT MCKENZIE "Poignant . . . My Abandonment lingers in the mind, leaving you as haunted as its mesmerizing characters."--New York Post "This is probably the recent novel I recommend most... [a] short, disciplined, unsettling book."--Hanya Yanagihara, author of A Little Life and The People in the Trees, for GQ A thirteen-year-old girl and her father live in Forest Park, an enormous nature preserve in Portland, Oregon. They inhabit an elaborate cave shelter, wash in a nearby creek, store perishables at the water's edge, use a makeshift septic system, tend a garden, even keep a library of sorts. Once a week they go to the city to buy groceries and otherwise merge with the civilized world. But one small mistake allows a backcountry jogger to discover them, which derails their entire existence, ultimately provoking a deeper flight. Inspired by a true story and told through the startlingly sincere voice of its young narrator, Caroline, My Abandonment is a riveting journey into life at the margins and a mesmerizing tale of survival and hope. "Original, unusual, and addictive."--Oregonian "[A] beautiful, strange novel . . . Fascinating and moving, it tells with great tenderness how human love goes wrong."--Ursula K. Le Guin

I quite liked this intriguing novel, one inspired by a true story. I must say that I was not a fan of the writing, but the story of the young, teenage girl living with her father secretly in the woods and what happens when they‘re discovered was fascinating and troubling. The real pair were named Frank and Ruth; I‘ll leave it for those interested to discover where the book and actual events part ways. The whole thing is worth exploring.

Caroline is 13. She and her father live in forest park in Portland, moving around so they won‘t be found. But they eventually are, upending their lives. This book didn‘t go where I expected and it left me with questions and thoughts. The story and writing are simplistic, but ultimately I felt it worked.

Mehso-so

In the genre of a child living off the grid with a parent, it is a pretty shallow accounting, without soul, beauty, fear, any higher thinking. After having read The Great Alone and Where the Crawdads Sing it was maybe a “meh”. I was so hoping for at least a satisfying ending!

This was an emotional read for me! I loved the second half of the book where it focuses on their disappearance. Highly recommend this book! I watched the movie after this book. While there were significant differences, I actually loved both the movie and the book.

A 13 year old and her dad live in the woods in Oregon until a jogger finds them and their life changes. This is going to be (or maybe is?) a movie, so I can‘t wait to read it!

valeriegeary I think the movie came out this year. I could be wrong. 🙄 5y

This was border so-so to pick for me, I really enjoyed it and just wanted more. I didn't realize it was based on a true story and after reading the news articles about the father and daughter, I went with pick because I think the author did a good job of adapting and expanding on the news stories.

If this doesn't start s dialogue about how far is too far or are these things really something we should try to control I don't know what will. This father and daughter changed how I see things and I felt for them.
