Whisper Me This
Whisper Me This | Kerry Anne King
Single mother Maisey Addington has always fallen short of her own mother's expectations--never married, a bit adrift, wasting her high IQ on dead-end jobs. The only thing Maisey's sure she's gotten right is her relationship with her twelve-year-old daughter, Elle...until a phone call blows apart the precarious balance of their lives. Maisey's mother is in a coma, and her aging father faces charges of abuse and neglect. Back at her childhood home, Maisey must make a heartrending life-or-death decision. Her confused father has destroyed family records, including her mother's final wishes. Searching for answers, Maisey uncovers one unspeakable secret after another when she stumbles upon a shattering truth: a twin sister named Marley. Maisey's obsession with solving the mystery of her sister forces her to examine her darkest memories and triggers a custody battle with Elle's father. Will Maisey's love for her daughter be strong enough to break a cycle of abuse and create a new beginning for them all?

I‘m a sucker for any book synopsis that mentions twins, so I couldn‘t pass this one up (plus the twins in question even have blue-green eyes! A shout out to #SweetValleyHigh perhaps?!). This domestic mystery isn‘t exactly unpredictable and the characters are not very easy to connect with, but it‘s a fast-paced listen. I‘m not sure if I will read more from this #NewToYouAuthor #AuldLangReads #AudioColoring

An interesting story. The most intriguing and realistic, to me, was how so many women make excuses for abusive men, and what it takes for the excuses to stop. #Scarathlon #teamslaughter @Clwojick

This book starts with what feels like an immature MC and simple writing style. But folks, it turns out there‘s a reason for it as we learn about the MC‘s life to explain why she is the way she is. As secrets unfold, the characters grow and the writing also becomes more complex. Meaningful character development as it explores the impact of family violence on multiple generations. Impressive. Stick with it—worth it. I admit: there were tears.

This is in the acknowledgment and I am so fortunate to say the same about the men in my life. What a book. I‘ll write a review a little later but I loved this last paragraph, I wanted to share it right away.

This was so timely for my friend whose ex was executed yesterday for the worst kind of abuse against a woman. This book brought me to tears. Love and embrace your women friends and the men who love without violence. ❤️

“Time for me is not linear. It flows in random loops and swirls, and sometimes in huge, incomprehensible leaps. I have entertained the possibility that I possess my own personal wormhole that opens into an alternate time continuum whenever I‘m engaged in an activity of interest. Reading, say...”

Sound familiar?

Just started this for my insomnia reading. Five stars on Amazon, 14% score on Litsy. Hmmm...

I didn‘t find this book as the reviews led me to believe. It was slow paced but, all in all, a decent read.

Just started this one but am feeling hesitant based on the reviews and the last bomb of a book I read. I did, however, agree with this.

Alright...this one is a DNF for me. I didn't like how childish Maisey was, I always felt like I was playing a game that the writer was changing the rules and not telling me, and the characters seemed kind of like a poorly casted indie flick. This was one, not only did I lose patience for, but I couldn't even be bothered to google the ending. Unfortunately this one doesn't get my stamp of approval. IMO, run far and run fast.

This has a few bright spots but overall it was just meh. The action was uneven and the story jumbled in spots.

jouleian Welp, all hope is lost 😂😂😂 #IPutTheBookDown 6y
MelissaS @jouleian there are better books to spend your time with! I cannot stop a book once I start and I‘ve wasted lots of time over he years as a result 😕 6y
jouleian @MelissaS I'm VERY much that way, but I'm SO annoyed with the main character this book might make it to my short list of DNFs 😂😂😂 6y

This book has been a slow read, but now I‘m close to the end and had to put it down for a few minutes. If I keep reading I will be bawling in public.

This book is unfolding rather haphazardly. Maisey is scatter-brained and I get it, but she's too childlike to be a grown ass adult. I almost hate that she's the main character.

MelissaS Ha! I‘m struggling through this one, too! My Kindle said I was at 80% when something finally started happening! 6y

I have to agree with some of the previous reviews that I‘ve read regarding this novel. It‘s not a thriller in my opinion, it‘s more contemporary women‘s fiction. It does deal with Domestic Violence, both emotional and physical, I liked the way Ms.King wove around how it affects children who have grown up in different families, with different levels of abuse. I saw it through the main protagonist‘s eyes who‘s trying to find herself.

MelissaS I would not classify this as a thriller at all. It‘s a struggle and is not gripping me. 6y
Sheryl63 It had its long moments; I'm glad I didn't bail. I'm struggling through one now; it's a fun read, but I'm finding myself easily distracted from 6y

Alright, so I've seen mixed reviews about this one and its suppose to be a psychological thriller of some sort. Which means in my realm its sitting with some heavy hitters like Karin Slaughter. So I'm going in with a positive outlook. May the book gods be gracious...#LetItBeGood #CrossingMyFingers #GoodReadsMaybe ?

The story is okay, though it's a bit predictable. My two biggest problems with the book are that the author doesn't seem to have any understanding of the proper use of commas and that the characters are far too one-dimensional to be interesting. The only parts of the book that I truly enjoyed were the excerpts from Leah's journal. To be completely honest, I think the book would have had more impact if it was more about Leah. 3 out of 5 stars.

MelissaS I would love to know and read more from Leah. 6y

It‘s funny how life spins, how we go on for long stretches of time and nothing changes, and then all at once, in a single moment, everything is altered.

This is a story of secrets, life choices, family, strength, and redemption. It also a reflection of domestic violence and how it affects the victim and their children, how there is a cycle of domestic violence, and reclaiming your life.

The book has fairly graphic scenes of domestic violence so beware. While the book was well written I felt there are some areas that are just too pat, too simplified, too “over the top”.

You see how it is? Talking around the edges of things. Never speaking the truth of it. Because if I speak of it, if I speak of any of it, then one of two things will happen: The disaster fended off by my silence will come crashing down on us. [...] Or nothing will happen, and all my heartbreak will have been for nothing. I‘m not sure which fate would be worse.

My past has been locked away so completely and so long that it had come to feel like it wasn‘t mine, my memories no more relevant to me than a book I‘d read or a movie seen and forgotten long ago. No more. Emotions well up inside me at odd moments, as powerful and fresh as if they were brand-new. You are my only defense, that and pure willful stubbornness. I can‘t speak to you of this, and my will, it seems, is failing.

...memories are hounding me now, night and day, and something must be done to lay them to rest. You will never know how much I long to speak them to you, but I don‘t have that kind of courage. I‘ve asked myself if maybe once the story is written out I could ask you to read it, but even that is beyond me.

I didn‘t tell you about my counseling session, as I didn‘t tell you about so many other things. I only went the one time. There was no point going back—the words are lodged too tightly in my chest to be able to speak them to a stranger.
