A moving story set in Kabul during the Taliban rule. A 11-yr old girl has to disguise as a boy to seek work to support the family, after their father was imprisoned. The illustrations are good, but the narrative feels rushed, some scenes like ‘chopped off‘ (feels like some pages missing), and the ending is abrupt. However it‘s a good eye opener for young readers. Perhaps the original novel and the animated film adaptation will have more depth.

I haven't read the book this graphic novel is based on but I think I need to read it. This was a short but powerful book about a young girl becoming a boy to support her family in Afghanistan.
There's also a short film on this book and I need to watch it.

This is a sort of novella length graphic novel adapted from an animated film that was adapted from a print novel. Quite well done for how convoluted that is. Tells the story of a young girl who disguises herself as a boy to help her family survive in Taliban controlled Afghanistan after her father is arrested since women are no longer allowed out of the house by themselves, and no one at the market will sell them food.

The bread winner was a good but for me confusing at some parts in the story the way the characters react to stuff and the way you can see there expressions and read them like a normal face is outstanding

🔸It's heartbreaking. As an incredibly empathetic person it's hard for me to read tough stuff sometimes without being deeply affected 🙁 I truly hope Afghanistan can find peace someday

Reading this graphic novel just makes me want to read the book it's based on now. 💚

It's the story of a young girl in Afghanistan who must pretend to be a boy in order to get food for her family. Although this one is sad, it's also hopeful.

Apparently there's an animated movie as well.

Amazing book for kids based on a novel by Deborah Ellis. The Breadwinner is part of a series dealing with children & war in Afghanistan. Eleven-year-old Parvana must disguise herself as a boy in order to support her family in Taliban controlled Kabul. Her father is in prison and war is on the horizon.
