Nightmare at the Book Fair
Nightmare at the Book Fair | Dan Gutman
7 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Trip Dinkleman hates to read. Hates, hates, hates it. All he wants to do is play lacrosse. So when the president of the PTA asks Trip to help her out on his way to tryouts, he is not happy. He is even more not happy when a stack of books tumbles onto his head and knocks him out cold. And he is even more not happy when he wakes up and has absolutely no idea where he is. Now all he wants to do is get home. But after encountering a haunted house, aliens, talking animals, and much, much more, he realizes getting home might be just a little bit harder to do than he thought.

Thought you moms and dads could relate to this one!

Desha 😂😂😂 6y
night_shift I used to work in a Scholastic warehouse building fairs... and this is absolutely true. The pens and pencils and all that junk were consistently best sellers. Also, most of it was cheap crap that stopped working or was broken when bought. And yet, we kept buying new junk every season because if we sold even a handful, profit. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
KrystleTheBookSlayer I was an odd child, I obviously wanted all the crap, but I mostly wanted the books! 📚😍 6y

zzz Exactly! We're going tonight and we've said nothing but books! 6y
Samplergal @UnidragonFrag when my kids were in school I cringed with the junk they‘d come back with. Even with threat of death. There were several years, we only went together and I squashed 70% of it. 6y
Samplergal @JenIsAlwaysReading Good Luck! Stand strong! 6y
Samplergal @KrystleTheBookSlayer we didn‘t have the choice of all that junk. It was simply books then. 6y
smilingshelves I work at a school library, and last time, we didn't even put the junk out. We just left it in the boxes under the tables. 😃 6y
GingerAntics They didn't even have that kind of stuff at book fairs when I was a kid. 6y
zzz @Samplergal here we go! Going in! Its always those erasers that are like gold to these kids😝 6y
Purrfectpages This is my students, every year. 6y
night_shift @smilingshelves - I knew a lot of schools did this! We'd get all those school supply boxes back looking exactly the same 😂 6y
night_shift But yeah, I give my kiddo money and just hope she doesn't bring home junk. I keep thinking of volunteering to help with the schools fair side I have the time now and know how it all works. 6y
TheRiehlDeal So true! I would buy both books and the junk. But by middle school, it was all about books. 6y
Cailey_Mac Omg I‘m the opposite; I always wanted the red and purple (early Book swag haha) 😂📚 I couldn‘t be bothered with the pens or anything that wasn‘t an actual physical book 6y
Jemgirl2014 I always fell in the purple category. I eas always a bookworm. 🤓 6y
SleepyDragon My kid only ever buys books and the occasional bookmark. He's the weird kid that walks right by the junk. Lol 6y

I‘m not saying they shouldn‘t be invited, but if you are coming to a Community Book Festival and you‘re buying books at the Barnes and Noble booth, what are you even doing?

Texreader That does seem odd 6y
DivineDiana Agree. Support local booksellers! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan A lot of places don‘t have local bookstores, Barnes & Noble is it. Or, it some places, it‘s the closest bookstore - & if you don‘t drive (me) or drive very little (thinking of those with health conditions that make even short trips difficult) you have to take what you can get. Also, Barnes & Noble is an obstacle of sorts to further domination of the book market by Amazon. I use Amazon but I try to mix it up so there‘s healthy competition. 6y

jpmcwisemorgan But it‘s weird if there are local places. Book People in Austin is usually at the Texas Book Festival, not Barnes & Noble - which is good. 6y
Yossarian @jpmcwisemorgan Barnes and Noble is great. I use it a lot. The local book festival features small publishers, independent book stores, self-published books, niche products, local authors, and lots of stuff that would get buried or never appear at Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Which makes me wonder why you‘d take the one day where there are 400 other options and still choose to go to B&N. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan People tend to shop what they know, I think. Not all readers are aware of what‘s out there by independent authors or self-publishing. I might browse to see if they had a deal on a book I wanted but I‘d go to all the other booths too. If it has books I‘m going to check it out! 6y
BookFreakOut I do enjoy B&N special editions and bargain books, but I'd be checking out the other booths over them. Then again, I also have decently easy access to a B&N all year. 6y

Excellent middle grade book that illustrates various genres of storytelling after a kid who hates to read gets hit in the head by books while helping set up for the book fair! #TeachersOfLitsy, be on the lookout for this!! Fun running gags and really inventive storytelling!

Looking through the books while we wait at the library for chess class & came across this gem. You have to love an author who knows how much hard work goes into the PTA and any book fair!!! ❤❤❤❤

MamaGina I love this!!! I ran several scholastic book fairs when my son was in school and it was my favorite time spent as a parent volunteer🤓 6y
IamIamIam @MamaGina It's one of my favorite committees to chair!!! I don't even want to think about how much money I've spent but I convince myself I'm building a library. LOL, it's always a fun time and I love helping kids choose books. 😉❤ 6y
