Road Trip!
Road Trip! | Jan Fields

The members of the Hook and Needle Club have made many exciting and adventurous road trips together through the years, but the opportunity to travel to Texas for a needlecraft convention is more than Annie Dawson and her friends can pass up. For Annie, it's a trip back to her old stomping grounds from her days when she and her late husband, Wayne, ran an automobile dealership. It's been more than three years since Wayne's death and since Annie moved to Stony Point, Maine, to take possession of Grey Gables, her late grandmother's old Victorian home. Now Annie returns to Texas, as Betsy is being honored at the convention for her groundbreaking work as a needlecrafter, and many of her works will be on display at a special exhibit. Accompanying Annie are three of her Hook and Needle Club friends: Mary Beth Brock, Kate Stevens, and Stella Brickson. Everything is going swimmingly until a death in Betsy's exhibit throws a pall on the road trip, and doubly so when Annie and her friends become part of the short list of suspects. In her first mystery away from the friendly confines of Grey Gables and Stony Point, Annie is drawn into the unseemly incident, and she lends her considerable talent in solving riddles to the handsome police detective assigned to the case.--From the publisher.

A great road trip awaits. 😊 Posted on FB through a fantastic local indie.

Aims42 How neat!! My parents live in Cedar Falls, will definitely be saving this list for a post-COVID road trip 🙌🏻 3y
vivastory Prairie Lights is one of the best bookstores I've ever visited. Only went once but have vivid memory of it. 3y
emz711 Too bad plot twist bookstore in Ankeny closed. I would escape from work in the middle of the day to browse 3y
emz711 I lived in iowa for 6 years and didn't hit up half of these places! 3y

Thanks for the suggestions for group reads for my road trip yesterday! Today I am looking for suggestions for my own reading on the trip. I'm in a bit of a slump. I'm looking for fun queer books, whodunnits (similar to Louise Penny or Kate Atkinson), shortish engaging not devastating narratives etc. Any suggestions?

I need some suggestions! I am going on a road trip with two well-read sci-fi fantasy geeks and want to find some good collections of short stories, or fun relatively quick reads that we can read to each other or listen to on audiobook. I'm less into sci-fi than them so nothing too technical. Any thoughts?

Zelma Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, The Martian by Andy Weir or 5y
xicanti Bujold‘s Vorkosigan books are all relatively short and enjoyable on audio. SHARDS OF HONOUR is a good starting place. Ditto JANE, UNLIMITED, an SF + other stuff novel by Kristin Cashore, and DOUBLE STAR by Robert A Heinlein. For short fiction, HOW LONG TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH? by N.K. Jemisin is great, and the Clarkesworld podcast has tons and tons of free short fiction. 5y
Dragon I enjoyed the Murderbot novellas 5y
Dragon Also enjoyed the audiobooks of the Illuminae Files 5y

I got no reading done this weekend because my sister in law, my kids and I took a road trip to see another one of my sister in laws. It was the hottest days we‘ve had this summer so far but lots of fun!

Hitting the road with your family this weekend (or this summer)? Here are some suggestions for audiobooks the whole family will love to read along the way!!

https://wellreadneck.wordpress.com/2019/05/24/family-road-trips-with-audiobooks/

RebL I love audio books and I love road trips and I love audiobooking on road trips with my kiddos. We did the Joey Pigza books once and that was fun too. BUT I'm commenting because I saw the pic on your website of RC Cola and Moon Pies and it gives me such joy! 5y

My friend and I are driving to and from Albuquerque later this year. It‘s about 20 hours in the car, round trip. We‘re considering an audiobook for the trip and have the following criteria:
1. Stand alone
2. 20ish hours
3. We both liked Ready Player One so something similar - fantasy, paranormal, sci-fi, pop culture references are all good
4. Not a mystery/thriller
5. Not Harry Potter because we both have read that - a lot

Any suggestions?

julesG Dodo? But it's definitely not 20 hours. 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG This one sounds like something we‘d both like. Amazon says it‘s under 25 hours so that could still work if we listened in the hotel some. Thank you! I‘ll put it in the list to chose from. @LibrarianRyan Does it work ok in audio? I‘ve read it and I‘m wondering how it works in that format. It‘s one I think my friend would like. 5y

LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan I haven‘t listened to it, but my friends rave that it‘s full cast. 5y
julesG @LibrarianRyan Illuminae was on my mind, too. The audiobook is good. But it's not a standalone. That said, I still haven't read book two and am still alive. 5y
LibrarianRyan @julesG I‘ve read the entire trilogy and had tooooooo. And I forgot she wanted a stand alone 5y
LibrarianRyan Okay how about You could do the entire series in about 20 hours. 5y
julesG @LibrarianRyan I will read the trilogy. I have book two on my kindle. I just haven't found the right time yet. I feel obligated to get my ARC TBR done first. 🙈🙈🙈🙈 5y
LibrarianRyan @julesG amen to that 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan @julesG I was thinking of a stand alone because I didn‘t want us to start a series and then not finish it but Illuminae would still work because it‘s not a long audiobook - we could probably get through 2/3 of the series in the trip. I‘m going to present it with the other two suggestions as options because I like all of them. Thank you both! 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG I‘ve only read Illuminae and I‘m also still alive! I keep thinking I‘ll finish it but I don‘t. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
julesG Let us know what you decide upon. 😉 5y
