End of semester treat: I got a dozen oysters from my CSA delivered this weekend to enjoy once my work was done. I‘ve only had them raw before, but needed a hand/wrist-friendly method, as I can‘t easily shuck them raw. Steamed just long enough to be cooked, and garnished with a homemade hot sauce and horseradish compound butter. Accompanied by my audiobook, of course.

julesG Enjoy the semester break! 1mo
cariashley Yum!! Oysters are my New Year‘s Eve tradition, but I‘m already dreading shucking them - delicious but so much work! 1mo

I just submitted my last piece of work, a take-home final, for the semester. 😳🤓
Am listening to this while playing games on my phone and one of the characters is explaining how her “family” works and it‘s very much a polycule and I love this relationship structure representation, even if it does come from a literal alien.

This was more enjoyable read than I expected. In fact it reminded me a bit of Harry Potter with all different creatures, friendships, fights and even the moralism. I kept skimming some parts though, space books really aren‘t my thing.

I am glad I read it though, thank you for sending it to me, #amazing @Cinfhen ❤️.
So this was my last post in #MOvember, looking forward though to new things and continuing the good ones here on Litsy with you 😘

Cinfhen Pretty photo!!! Now I NEED to get myself there so we can finally have our meetup 😘😘I couldn‘t get into this book either...I guess we‘re more rooted to earth 😂 2mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Yes, do plan that AmsterdAm trip! That would be great! We‘re in sync again about the books, I‘m loving 2mo
Kalalalatja All your pics make me want to visit Holland 😍 2mo
Cinfhen Yay!!!! I like when we‘re in sync 😘except for maybe 2mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I feel exactly like the father when he watches his daughter walking off that stairs. Do you remember that scene in the beginning of the book? Wow 🥰😢 2mo
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I always think our countries look much alike, but I only visited Copenhagen so I really can‘t know. 2mo
Cinfhen Yes!! I thought it was so powerful and I could literally see it playing out before my eyes. Jacqueline Woodson is able to capture so much in so few words. 2mo
Kalalalatja I have never been to Amsterdam, so I can‘t say for sure, but from what I have heard, both countries are very flat, full of fields, and a lot of the major cities are port cities with canals 😄 but Amsterdam looks so pretty, I have to travel there someday! 2mo
Centique I‘ve only had two days in Amsterdam on a work trip but I fell so in love with it! @Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I‘m dreaming of getting back there in the next few years and looking around properly with my husband. I‘d love to go to Copenhagen too - but it‘s so hard when you‘re on the other side of the world, there‘s so much to try and pack into your one trip to Europe! 2mo
LeeRHarry Glad you didn‘t dislike this book - that would have been very disappointing 😆 following the Amsterdam talk, I have been to Schiphol airport at least 10 times but never made it into the city! 🤦🏼‍♀️😏 2mo
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja Exactly! That‘s how I feel about our countries. I loved Copenhagen though. It feels less cramped than Amsterdam with much more space for bicycles. And I loved the various neighbourhoods! 2mo
BarbaraBB @LeeRHarry Next time make sure to get that train into the city. It‘s 15 minutes 😘 2mo
BarbaraBB @Centique Yes that is true, especially with tough competition from cities like Paris and Rome! But I‘m happy you liked my city! 😘 2mo

Feel good sci-fi, adventurous and exciting. There is danger. There is injustice. How they are dealt with, and with such an amazing outlook and outcome, are truly masterful.

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet my first space opera and it did not disappoint. The Wayfarer crew is made up of all different species with special skill sets that allow them to create wormhole tunnels through which other ships can then travel through space. It's a fun adventure, but the relationships and characters are what I found most interesting. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

If you are looking for a sci-fi book about an isolated person who does not rely on anyone, do not read this book. If you want to read how a group of individuals (humans/aliens/AI) end up on a spaceship and the communities they meet (not all friendly), read this amazing book! Amazing break/time read. On to the next one if this #Hugo winning series!

Finished this on audio today. It took me a little while to get into this story, but once I did, I was hooked. Chambers developed some really interesting species and characters. There were so many elements of this story that reflected current issues in a space futuristic way. Very interesting if you are into fantasy!

Sometimes we need stories of people in a huge universe to focus on the small, everyday things that make us human.

If you like the stories of Festus traveling the universe in Startripper having fun adventures with new cultures, you should give the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers a shot.

Fascinating world building, feel-good stories paired with serious stories with more intimate stakes than the whole universe.

#bookcast2019

rwmg I'm doing this backwards. Is liking Becky Chambers's books a reason to read Star Stripper. And can you link to the book please? I suspect googling it is asking for trouble. 5mo
chaoticgoodhufflepuff @rwmg Startripper is a fun audio drama podcast. https://www.whisperforge.org/startripper This post is kind of supposed to work both ways as a recommendation. If you‘ve enjoyed one, I think you‘ll enjoy the other. I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks at work, and I‘ve been sharing books that I felt pair up nicely with the podcasts. 5mo

I put off reading this partially because I feared it wouldn‘t live up to the hype & partially because you can only read a book for the first time once.

This book was everything I love about sci-fi. And given how close it came to never being written, well, I‘m so thankful the author took a chance. This might be my fave read of 2019. All the ⭐️

I‘m biased to liking space opera so someone else may have ranked it lower. That isn‘t to say it‘s poorly written.

Chambers has a great cast of characters and some decent world building(though she is fond of info dumping). The problem is that... well... nothing of consequence really happens.

Until the last few pages, there isn‘t really a plot. It‘s like drinking a flat soda. All the flavor is there, just no pop. Still, it was a fun read.

Aw, man, this was great! There were a couple of places where my attention wavered, but the good parts are SO good I can‘t even mind. The book‘s chock full of cool people enjoying each other‘s company in mostly healthy, loving ways, with occasional spots of darker drama as the universe encroaches. I‘m excited for the rest of the series, even though each instalment follows different characters. Hopefully these folks will get some cameos, at least.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I was sad to leave these characters too, and the second novel focuses on different ones, but I was surprised that I loved the second book even more! 7mo

Book + fake ice cream (frozen banana all mushed up with cocoa and peanut butter). I‘m loving this one so far! It‘s all about cool people doing stuff together, IN SPACE. Totally my thing, though I can see why more plot-oriented readers might balk at it.

It‘s also not at all what I expected. I always thought this series followed different groups of characters on a generation ship, not regular old space travellers.

Swe_Eva Ooh, I'll be making that “ice cream“ tonight. I already have frozen bananas for smoothies, but this is a much better use! The book is great too. 😂 (edited) 7mo
xicanti @Swe_Eva you‘ll love it! I usually use about a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder per smallish banana, and the flavour‘s great. Much stronger than most commercial chocolate ice creams, especially with the peanut butter in the mix. 7mo
Swe_Eva @xicanti Sounds perfect! 7mo

Nute Is that a frozen treat? Do you add crushed ice and then freeze? I like all of the listed ingredients and happen to have all three of them on hand...I‘m going to make it this weekend.🙂 7mo
xicanti @Nute I usually freeze a very ripe banana in a few big chunks. Once it‘s fully frozen, I take it out, chop it up a bit more by hand, and stick it in my little electric food chopper with the other ingredients. (I‘m sure a food processor would work, too.) No ice required. It turns out pretty thick, with a similar texture to dense ice cream, and I eat it as soon as I‘ve scooped it out of the chopper. 7mo
twohectobooks I always thought this book was about a generation ship as well. The third book in the series actually is :) 7mo
xicanti @twohectobooks that must be where I got the impression from! 7mo
twohectobooks @xicanti I think for me it was the title. When I see “the long way” in the context of sf I immediately think “generation ship.” 7mo
