Goodreads Choice 2013 Nominee - Science FictionWhen out-of-shape IT technician Roen woke up and started hearing voices in his head, he naturally assumed he was losing it. He wasn't. He now has a passenger in his brain - an ancient alien life-form called Tao, whose race crash-landed on Earth before the first fish crawled out of the oceans. Now split into two opposing factions - the peace-loving, but under-represented Prophus, and the savage, powerful Genjix - the aliens have been in a state of civil war for centuries. Both sides are searching for a way off-planet, and the Genjix will sacrifice the entire human race, if that's what it takes. Meanwhile, Roen is having to train to be the ultimate secret agent. Like that's going to end up well... File Under Science Fiction [ The Tug of War - I Was Genghis - Diary of a Slob - Spy vs Spy ]

This is an interesting book, but when the author decides to refrigerate a character, it made me mad! Stop using lazy writing and create female characters with depth! Interesting concept and world through.
Tao is an alien that takes on an unwilling host in an effort to survivor and pulls his new host into a deadly war between alien factions. Symbiotic or parasites, these aliens shaped human history and might be trying to destroy us. 2/5 stars.

Ooops I forgot to do my book for Saturday...

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Interesting concept: incorporeal near-immortal alien must train out-of-shape nerd to be a super agent. Lots of people liked it but it mostly didn't work for me. The dialog was hit-and-miss; the humor fell well short of the promise on the cover blurb. One-dimensional female characters. Weird typography of the internal dialog made many interchanges hard to follow.

A fun series based on a ridiculous premise: body snatchers, alien invasion, oh my! Definitely more of a bro book, but the story is interesting enough that I‘ll stick with it.

 @Jess7

The Lives of Tao is the first book in a series that shapes up to be a lot of fun. It is a secret agent/extra terrestrial/alien invasion story packed full of action with a lot of character development through all 3 books.

Makes for a great, easy, summer, read. 🤘

vivastory Might need to bump this up the TBR! 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @vivastory Its a lot of fun. Not a complicated read by any means. I really appreciated the transformation of the protagonists journey from book 1 through book 3. 👍 6y

Another random grab off the library shelf. This book starts off on the run and doesn't really stop until the end. Written with a more cinematic than a literary, it's not a bad book and it does move fast for 457 pages.

I am most of the way done with the third book and really have enjoyed the series so far. It is definitely worth a read if you enjoy science fiction, history, espionage, aliens, or action.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.5/5 definitely a "Bro book," but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Despite being a male fantasy spy thriller, Chu also digs into action/spy thriller tropes and explores how they might play out in a real(-ish) world setting. I was pretty impressed for a debut novel, but on principle, I couldn't give a book with such an ending a 4 star rating. #scifi #aliens #spies #action

Picking a favorite new writer crush among those from 2016, it's an incredibly tough choice. Gotta go with Wesley Chu. He's got a great voice to his stories, adding lots of humor. A close second would have to be Padma Venkatraman. I might have only read one book by her in 2016, but meeting her at the James River Writers Conference made a big impact on me. Her writing is beautiful, and she has so much to share. #2016 #HappyNewYear #2017

I thought this book was a fun idea and an interesting story. I had two problems with it, though, which were:
1) Lack of character development, particularly with the female characters. This lack is a deal-breaker for me, and the women just felt like they were cardboard cutouts.
2) The ending of the book felt both rushed and unfinished. There wasn't the same endearing struggles as in the first parts, and no real conclusion, which was frustrating!

When I found this book, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Wesley Chu delivers a well-paced action novel with a great twist on an alien conspiracy on Earth. Tao and Roen's relationship takes some amazing turns, making me laugh and eventually teary-eyed. Chu is easily one of my new favorite authors. I can't wait to read more of his work. #WesleyChu #scifi #livesoftao

Just realized this is only the second book I've ever read (that I'm aware of) with an Asian lead. That's crazy.

BestOfFates I enjoyed this series, though I almost quit a few times because of how uncomfortable I found the female characters. But I did enjoy Tao & how the aliens integrated into the world! 8y
