4 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
An Edgar Awardwinning mystery featuring the forensic anthropologist hailed as a likable, down-to-earth, cerebral sleuthfrom the author of Switcheroo (Chicago Tribune). With the roar of thunder and the speed of a galloping horse comes the tide to Mont St. Michel, goes the old nursery song. So when the aged patriarch of the du Rocher family falls victim to the perilous tide, even the old mans family accepts the verdict of accidental drowning. But too quickly, this accident is followed by a bizarre discovery in the ancient du Rocher chateau: a human skeleton, wrapped in butcher paper, beneath the old stone flooring. Professor Gideon Oliver, lecturing on forensic anthropology at nearby St. Malo, is asked to examine the bones. He quickly demonstrates why he is known as the Skeleton Detective, providing the police with forensic details that lead them to conclude that these are the remains of a Nazi officer believed to have been murdered in the area during the Occupation. Or are they? Gideon himself has his doubts. Then, when another of the current du Rochers diesthis time via cyanide poisoninghis doubts solidify into a single certainty: Someone wants old secrets to stay buried . . . and is perfectly willing to eradicate the meddlesome American to make that happen. Voted one of the Independent Mystery Booksellers Associations 100 Favorite Mysteries of the 20th Century, and featuring a thrilling final scene, Old Bones will captivate fans of Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen as well as readers of Aaron Elkinss popular Alix London series (Publishers Weekly). Old Bones is the 4th book in the Gideon Oliver Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Dr Oliver tells me that I am the third or fourth tourist who has tagged along with him to visit Mont Saint-Michel! This place is extraordinary. I am so glad to see it. But I keep picturing myself in a spooky, gothic movie. #backpackEurope #France

How did I not know about this series?!

Gideon Oliver, a physical anthropologist & professor, has a penchant to get drawn into murder cases - earning him the moniker "The Skeleton Detective." I joined him in Mont St. Michel to investigate bones found in a manoir cellar, just after the accidental death of the patriarch. Was that a coincidence and whose bones are they? We assist the police in finding out, trying to stay alive in the process!

LeahBergen Mont St Michel is one of the most magical places I‘ve ever visited. I‘ve read a couple in this series (my minor was in Physical Anthropology 😄) but not this one! 6y
mabell @LeahBergen It sounds magical! (And terrifying! Hence the tide table 😬) How cool you have a minor in physical anthropology!! It would give you an advantage reading these. 😂 What was your major? 6y

LeahBergen @mabell A lot of my physical anth focus was primatology. My major was Psychology. Not that I ever did anything with any of it. 😂😂😂 6y
mabell @LeahBergen I love that! What a unique combination! Does anyone actually do something with their undergrad anyway?? 😂 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Well, I became a psychologist for 35 years 🤣 6y
mabell @Joyfulmimi Nice! That must have interesting work! My husband has a psych degree, and now he is in finance. 🤷‍♀️😂 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Life is interesting! I am still a psychotherapist. 6y

The lovely Pilkingtons set me down in France before setting off for the Rhine. (The details of Luxembourg are now up on my blog 😄)

Now that I am in France - Oh my! So many things I would like to see and do! My book takes me to Mont St. Michel on the west coast, so I will try to fit a lot in on my way there. First stop: a visit to the festival at Avignon. Hopefully I will be able to catch a performance!
