Wow. This was bold, baroque, dark and distressing. The blurb is quite deceptive, this is definitely NOT magical realism as it's usually understood, it's more about the hazy boundary between imagination and delusion. The tone is set by the little-known UK pet massacre of 1939 so proceed with caution but it's also riveting and heartbreaking and full of touching characters. I definitely needed the tea and biscuits for comfort!

RealLifeReading What a beautiful saucer! 8y
Yeah_I_Read I started this but it was a little too weird for my taste 😬 8y
Moray_Reads @Yeah_I_Read It's definitely that, but I kind of like weird, if it's done well 8y

rubyslippersreads I'm glad you warned me; I can't handle anything about animal cruelty. Your photo is gorgeous, though. 8y
Moray_Reads @rubyslippersreads it's not particularly graphic and the killing of the pets has happened just before the story starts but I think it would still be too much for some readers 8y
LeahBergen I need one of those cookies! 8y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen they're the best! You can tell by all those red nutrition warnings 😉 8y

This one is sucking me in (Image is a Henry Moore painting of Londoners sheltering in the Tube during the Blitz held at the Tate - his work, and the reaction to it is really fascinating)

Well that's dark and disconcerting... 😓

LeahBergen 😬 8y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen And it's taking about my local library too! I suppose I should just be glad it's not taking about where I work (now I'm wondering if there are procedures in case someone dies at work...) 8y
LeahBergen Just be careful how you take your sneaky afternoon naps! 😂 8y
Suet624 It's the bathrooms at the library you have to worry about... I worked for a city and we always had to clean people up who slept In there 8y

Goblin is a clever, humane, stoic child who rises above tragedy through her lively fantasy life. And Ever Dundas' telling of Goblin's story is spot on. She doesn't balk at telling harsh truths, but she doesn't use them to shock or horrify. Bad things happen. You deal with them. I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to read this because it's given me a new author to follow, and that is always a wonderful thing.

I've discovered Net Galley thanks to you Littens. I'm not sure if I should thank you all or grumble at you. LOL
