Here‘s my recommendation for #HauntedShelf. If you are looking for an easy read in Spanish with a spooky vibe, this is a good one. If you don‘t read Spanish I know there are dual language editions and you can just read the English. Very atmospheric and creepy.

I just realized I never made a post about one of my favorite reads of the year.

Aura by Carlos Fuentes gave me major Shirley Jackson vibes from the beginning, so I had a feeling I was going to love it. There's a great little twist at the end that I never saw coming. This is a book I will be rereading for sure. (and hopefully in Spanish next time 😊)

Es un libro muy aclamado, pero que me aburrió muchísimo.
Si bien la utilización de la segunda persona es original, la historia en sí me parece predecible y nunca logré apegarme a los personajes.
Lo leí como tarea, pero no volvería a leerlo...

Storytelling in the second person works superbly for the terror and magic. Not difficult to predict, but that's never been a problem for me. A good plot twist on its own won't make a short story survive time: this story is about keeping beauty young forever, about immortality. If the preservation of beauty beyond what is natural is a sign of the supernatural, this story is an apparition. I thought it was beautiful.

I read this for class (thank god it's short) but it's a great spooky Halloween read, replete with poisonous plants, unbroken darkness, bloody carcasses, and an old woman and her niece with a very strange connection...

What a perfect book to read in a bilingual edition.
