As Poet Laureate, Collins instituted the program Poetry 180 for high schools. Collins chose 180 poems for the program and the accompanying book, Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry—one for each day of the school year.. The program is online, and poems are available there for no charge.

GingerAntics I‘m so happy to see this. There needs to be more poetry in the education system. There should be no way of getting through high school without having ever read or studied a poem. I recall having to write three poems (for some contests that the teacher turned into an assignment) without ever studying or even discussing a single poem. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I use poetry almost exclusively in mentoring at the alternative school 🤍 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I don‘t know why it‘s not more of a go to, especially as students read less and less. Yes, we want to get them reading more, but why not show them the value of well written 280 characters. Poetry is so much more expressive as well, so i think they connect to it so much better. Shouldn‘t the goal be to get them into literature one way or the other? As usual, I love what you‘re doing with your kids. 💙💙💙 3y

I met Billy Collins‘ work through his efforts as poet laureate of the United States. This collection is great to dip into at will; just like the website he created to showcase the world of poetry for use in any classroom, anywhere.

Louise He's wonderful! His reading of "The Lanyard" gets me every time! ❤️ 6y

Had a meeting most of the day so I only got to have #PoetryWednesday with my afternoon 5th graders. This was their poem.

The whole thing is great and you should google it.

ValerieAndBooks What you do with your students is really cool! This reminds me of when my dad was a schoolteacher and he had all of Kenneth Koch's books on teaching poetry. I loved reading them too (as a kid-- yeah I'm probably showing my age 😊). I bet you go all out in April, national poetry month! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @ValerieAndBooks Thanks! I certainly try. Sometimes the kids are into it, sometimes not so much, but it does become something they're not wary of and if some of them use it as a form of expression all the better. 7y

Feb. 28: A Summer Day - Reading Oliver all I can think about is that she must've loved the transcendentalists. those final two lines are also gold. #LitsyPoetry365

I'm not gonna lie....I'm not the biggest poetry fan. I used to love it as a child, but as I grew up, I became cynical and jaded, and the majority of it struck me as pretentious. However, I took a Contemporary Poetry class last semester and enjoyed quite a few of those poets, especially Anne Sexton and Sharon Olds, but I definitely have to be in a poetry-reading mood to enjoy it. #augustphotochallenge #poetrybooks 😊📚

LiteraryinLawrence Billy Collins is the only poet I read for fun. He's great. :) 8y
Leelee08 @LiteraryinLititz I definitely liked his work. I found this book at a thrift store and snatched it up.😀 8y
Shortstack I love Anne Sexton!!! 8y

Has anyone done this book with a class? I was thinking about doing it with mine, but then I read the poems were intended for high school students? Any thoughts?

Peddler410 I'm not familiar with this book but I'm going to look for it. I have used poetry intended for younger and older students in the past, depends on the group of kids. 8y
